Charlotte is home to one of the hottest new Black-owned restaurants in the US, Yelp says

Charlotte is home to a long list of delicious Black-owned restaurants, but one local hot spot has been named one of the best in the country.

In honor of Black History Month, Yelp released a list of the top 25 hot and new Black-owned restaurants to celebrate and support in 2024 based on several factors, ratings and reviews.

Of all the beloved Black-owned restaurants across the U.S., only one in Charlotte made the list: Uptown Yolk.

From Rock Hill to the 7th Street Public Market — now called The Market at 7th Street — and now in South End, the local restaurant has been a staple in the Charlotte area for years.

After two-year hiatus, Uptown Yolk has now reopened in Charlotte’s South End

Led by four-time James Beard-nominated chef Gregory Collier and his business partner and wife, Subrina, Uptown Yolk is known for its menu influenced by the Memphis restaurant scene. Dishes include shrimp and grits, sweet potato waffles and more.

Recently, the restaurant also rolled out dinner service, too, with new bites, local beers on tap, signature cocktails and more, CharlotteFive previously reported.

“Uptown Yolk is founded on contemporary Southern food. So adding hearty dinner items and a few more sandwiches, sides and PM hours makes sense,” Subrina Collier previously said.

Aside from Uptown Yolk, one other North Carolina eatery made Yelp’s list of the top Black-owned restaurants in the U.S.: Zweli’s Ekhaya, an upscale Southern African restaurant in Durham, ranked 12th in the report.
