Charlotte librarian making documentary about Black librarians
A librarian in Charlotte is taking on a mission to tell the untold stories of fellow Black librarians.
Rodney Freeman is making a new documentary about Black librarians, past and present, who experienced discrimination but continued their efforts to keep diverse books accessible to everyone.
“Being a Black librarian means that you do have an additional responsibility to make sure that everyone is truly represented in the library,” Freeman said.
Freeman says his documentary traces the history of Black librarianship across the country, and that it speaks to the people doing the work today.
According to ABC News reports in 2021, just about seven percent of librarians across the United States were Black.
