The most expensive home in the Charlotte area hit the market today.

Located on Merancas Island in south Lake Norman, the $22-million, 13,000-square-foot property offers 360-degree views of the lake.

Owners Cornelis and Johanna Mermans paid $1.5 million for the land in 1997 and completed their home two years later, according to Mecklenburg County public records.

A large swath of land in Charlotte’s university area could soon be transformed.

A proposal from Wilmington-based developer Tribute Companies would see the 182-acre site turned into nearly 2,000 residential units, an elementary school and a 16-acre park.

The proposal was up for a City Council hearing this week and a vote to approve the petition could come as early as next month.
