To compile the rankings, Niche.com expanded its scope beyond test scores and academic performance to incorporate other measures in determining the best schools. That included ratings from current students, alumni and parents as well as other metrics such as sports, diversity and quality of school administration.

The 2023 rankings included data for more than 92,000 public schools, 30,000 private schools and 11,000 school districts nationwide.

For the ranking on private K-12 schools, Niche.com analyzed data and assigned grades in the categories of academics, diversity, teachers, college prep, clubs and activities, and sports — before determining a school’s overall Niche grade. It pulled data from the U.S. Department of Education, among other sources, in addition to information from the student and parent surveys.

Coming in as North Carolina’s top-ranked private K-12 school was Durham Academy. For South Carolina, Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville ranked No. 1.
