Charlotte woman not in car during 2023 wreck, but filed insurance claim anyway

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — N.C. Department of Insurance officials say a Charlotte woman committed a felony when she submitted an insurance claim after a wreck she was not involved in.

State officials say 36-year-old Peebles Laverne Love Johnson committed insurance fraud when she submitted a fraudulent claim to Sentry Insurance Company after a May 29, 2023 wreck.

Johnson said she was driving her Toyota Sequoia SUV with a passenger in the vehicle when it was involved in a crash. According to the criminal summons, Johnson was not in the vehicle during the crash.

Johnson must appear in Mecklenburg County District Court on Feb. 29.

When they learn of the wrongdoing, N.C. residents should report insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes. They can report anonymously by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll-free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
