There's an intoxicating scent that Carlos Villamil associates with a visit to Walmart: the smell of freshly made doughnuts. That's because in Puerto Rico, where he grew up, colorful mini doughnut stands called Gaby Mini Donas serve up warm mini doughnuts outside well over a dozen Walmart stores on the island.

When he and his wife, Joan, moved to Canandaigua 15 years ago, they saw an opportunity to create their own version of the concept.

The Dainty Donut Factory got its start as charming pink food trailer that has been selling warm, made-to-order mini cake doughnuts at festivals and private events around Rochester and the Finger Lakes since 2019.

Now the Villamils have achieved their original vision: they have opened a mini doughnut shop in the Walmart store in Macedon, Wayne County. Macedon is a sweet spot for the Dainty Donut Factory; the couple vended outside various shops there during the pandemic in 2020. "It was great," Carlos Villamil said. "We had lines for hours nonstop."

The Dainty Donut Factory menu offers classics like plain, cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar, as well as embellished creations like strawberry shortcake, maple bacon, apple pie, French toast, s'mores, Oreo crumble and Fruity Pebbles. It also features a flavor of the month; Boston Cream is the flavor for August. They are sold in quantities of six (two flavors), 12 (four flavors) and 30 (six flavors).

In addition to mini doughnuts, the Macedon shop serves coffee, cappuccino, latte and cold brew from Imprint Coffee Roasting in Sodus, Wayne County, as well as teas and lemonades.

The shop has eight tables for dining in ― four high tops and four standard height. It also has a photo station with a couch and a neon sign with the shop's name.

In the near future, the Villamils plan to add other Puerto Rican treats to the menu. They also hope to eventually expand into additional Walmart stores.
