Chase leads to standoff with knife-wielding man on Lubbock County highway

Lubbock County Sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement were at an hours-long standoff Wednesday afternoon with a man who was allegedly brandishing a knife and barricaded in a vehicle along U.S. Highway 84 following a chase through the county.

Around 4:37 p.m., the subject was identified as 45-year-old Millington Fields and was taken into custody after he surrendered to law enforcement, according to LSO.

Fields is being detained at the Lubbock County Detention Center and has been charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, reckless driving and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident started around 1:30 p.m. with a pursuit by the Abernathy Police Department, who asked for assistance with a vehicle traveling at speeds up to 100 mph.

Fields came to a stop on U.S. 84 around 2 p.m. but refused to leave the vehicle, showing deputies that he had a knife with him, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office SWAT was deployed, according to LSO. The public was asked to avoid the area for a time but the roads have since been reopened.
