The cheapest gas if you're traveling to Texas metros from Austin this Thanksgiving

Are you heading over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house this Thanksgiving? Or maybe road-tripping for a "Friendsgiving" with your college roommates?

Gas prices have dropped over the last few months to make trips you're taking this holiday week a bit more affordable, but expect the roads to be full of other vehicles if you're driving.

Looking at data from the American Automobile Association and GasBuddy Tuesday morning, we mapped out where to find the cheapest gas if you're traveling towards the three other biggest metro areas in Texas from Austin this week.

Gas is cheaper in Houston than Austin

If you're heading to the Houston area, note that AAA says the average price of gas is four cents cheaper per gallon in Harris County over Travis County at $2.74.

As you begin your trip, the cheapest gas appeared to be in Bastrop, with some gas stations reportedly offering gas at $2.48, although several locations in the Houston area also had prices around $2.38.

Stop before midway point to Dallas/Fort Worth for cheaper gas

If you're heading north on I-35 to the Dallas/Fort Worth area, AAA notes Bell County has the cheapest average price at $2.669/gallon. It also notes that Travis County's average price is about five cents cheaper than Dallas County and two cents cheaper than Tarrant County at $2.78/gallon.

Indeed, if you stop in Temple, there are stations with gas at $2.59 right off I-35. If you head into the city a bit, you can find prices as low as $2.44, according to GasBuddy.

Cheap gas in South Austin if you're driving to San Antonio

If you're taking a relatively short drive south to San Antonio on I-35, AAA says the average price of gas is about 13 cents less per gallon in Bexar County than Travis County at $2.647.

But a gas station in South Austin on St. Elmo Road has gas for $2.46, according to GasBuddy, the cheapest as you begin your trip south. Within San Antonio, a handful of locations have gas for below $2.40.
