Cheatum earns weekly conference honor

Nov. 14—Kansas State senior safety Drake Cheatum was named co-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Monday following the Wildcats' 31-3 victory at Baylor on Saturday.

The weekly conference honor is the first for the Prairie View A&M transfer and the ninth this season for No. 19 K-State, the most in a season since 2012 when the Wildcats also earned nine.

The Mesquite, Texas, native was part of a K-State defense that managed to hold Baylor out of the end zone all night, something K-State has done three times this season.

Cheatum put the capper of the game, picking off Bears' quarterback Blake Shapen on Baylor's final drive of night, cementing the win. The senior ended the game with five tackles.

The safety ranks fourth on the team with 40 tackles and has two pass breakups and a forced fumble. He's had a least four tackles in each of the last eight games, including a season-high six at TCU.

The Wildcats will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia, this week to take West Virginia. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. Saturday and the game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
