Cheboygan Area Arts Council offering student scholarships

CHEBOYGAN — The Cheboygan Area Arts Council is inviting students to apply for three scholarships that support further arts education.

The scholarships include: the Moloney scholarship for students in grades 4-11 planning to enroll in an extended arts-related program, such as a summer camp; and the Caulkins and Hubbel scholarships, which are awarded to graduating high school seniors planning advanced studies in an arts-related field.

Application forms are available at theoperahouse.org/scholarships and at the Opera House office, open from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Applications are due Monday, April 3, 2023 by end of day.

The Robert L. Moloney Scholarship Fund

In 1988, a bequest was given to the Cheboygan Area Arts Council from the Estate of Robert L. Moloney to be used to provide extended studies in arts-related activities for Cheboygan County students, including home schooled students and students enrolled at Mackinaw City and Onaway schools.

Moloney, whose home was in Metamora, Michigan, was a frequent visitor to this area and took great interest in the renovations of the Opera House. He contributed to both the Building Fund and the Arts Council, and made provisions in his estate so local students would have the opportunity to attend summer camp programs specializing in music and the arts. Scholarships are awarded in the amount of between $100 – $500.

Some of the camps sponsored in the past include Interlochen Center for the Arts, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Wolverine Band Camp, Western Michigan University School of Music, Northern Michigan University Summer Music Camp, University of Michigan School of Music, and Central Michigan University Music Camp, Young Americans and others.

Wendy Caulkins and Irene Hubbel Fine Arts College Scholarships

These scholarships honor the memory of two devoted patrons and benefactors of the Opera House: Irene R. Hubbel and Wendy Caulkins.

The scholarships — in the amount of $500 — are available to students pursuing higher education in the arts at an accredited college in the school year following graduation. Students must be entering a field of the performing arts, visual arts, the applied arts, graphic art and design, digital arts, or creative writing. Applicants must be graduating seniors from high schools in Cheboygan, Wolverine, Indian River, Mackinaw City, Onaway, or be Cheboygan Area Arts Council Dance students or home school students residing in Cheboygan County.

The scholarships will be announced at graduation and will be awarded to the schools following the students’ first completed semester of higher education. The scholarship recipients must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher during the first college semester.

The criteria for selection for this award include:

  • Graduation from high school

  • Acceptance by an accredited institution of higher learning

  • Interest in the appropriate arts-related majors

  • Sound educational goals
