Cheboygan DECA students qualify for state competition
CHEBOYGAN — A total of 10 students from the Cheboygan Area High School DECA team qualified for states following a strong showing at a competition earlier this month.
Twenty marketing education students took part in the Dec. 15 competition at Saginaw Valley State University, where over 600 students in total were participating in over 15 different business related events.
During the competition, students could earn medals for their online test score, a role-play interview with a local business professional, and for earning a spot at the state competition.
According to teacher Brent Richard, students who decide to join DECA first select a marketing related event they want to compete in, such as business services, entrepreneurship, sports marketing, hotel and lodging management, human resource management, finance or other related areas. After they learn marketing and business principles in class, they take a standardized national online exam. The second part of the competition involves an in-person role-play interview while at the Saginaw Valley State University event. The interviewer rates students’ responses based on their problem solving skills, creative ideas, originality, business relevance and professionalism.

Cheboygan students earned a total of 19 medals during the Dec. 15 Saginaw Valley State University event. Ten students qualified for the state competition, set for March 10-12 in Detroit. Three students earned all three possible medals.
Based on their performance at the statewide competition, students could earn qualification for the International Career Conference in Orlando, Florida in April.
