Cheboygan’s Gibbons earns spot on All-SAC basketball second team

On any given night, Connor Gibbons was capable of lighting it up.

On many nights this past season, that’s exactly what the Cheboygan senior basketball player did against opponents.

Following a strong final season with the program, Gibbons recently earned a spot on the All-Straits Area Conference boys basketball second team.

In conference play this winter, Gibbons averaged 10.8 points per game to lead the Chiefs. Gibbons established himself as one of the best outside shooters in the SAC.

Meanwhile, Cheboygan junior guard Kaleb Goodrich secured a nod on the All-SAC team as an honorable mention. Making the SAC’s All-Defensive team was Cheboygan junior forward Brennen Thater.

Winning the SAC’s Player of the Year honor was St. Ignace junior Jonny Ingalls, who averaged 24.4 points, 6.6 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game in conference play for the Saints, who later won a regional title and reached the state quarterfinals before bowing out to Traverse City St. Francis on Tuesday night.

Joining Ingalls on the SAC first team was Sault Ste. Marie junior Carter Oshelski, who was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. First team recognition also went to St. Ignace’s Ethan McLean, Sault Ste. Marie’s Max Scott and Nate Koepp, and Rudyard’s Cam Peterson.

Making up the rest of the SAC second team were Newberry’s Matthew Rahilly, Rudyard’s Jesse Zeeryp, Sault Ste. Marie’s Kaydin Lujan, and St. Ignace’s Kevin Frazier.

Honorable mention nods went to Aiden Bickel (Rudyard), Dylan McMillan (Rudyard), John Gravelle (Sault Ste. Marie) and Tyrel Matson (St. Ignace). A special mention went to Dominac Haller (Sault Ste. Marie).

Joining Thater on the SAC’s All-Defensive Team were St. Ignace’s Nick Hallberg, Oshelski, Bickel and Rahilly.

Winning the conference this past season was Sault Ste. Marie (15-8), which went a perfect 8-0 in SAC play. St. Ignace (22-5, 6-2) took second.
