Cheboygan school board celebrates students of the month

CHEBOYGAN — The Cheboygan Area Schools Board of Education celebrated the high school’s January Students of the Month and Inverness Academy’s February Student of the Month during its meeting on Monday.

Freshman Elise Markham was the first student recognized. Nominated by Abigail Spears, Markham was described as a student who works hard and always has a smile on her face as she walks into class.

"Every assignment and contribution towards the class shows that you strive for greatness and that you understand material and topics on a deeper level,” Spears wrote in her nomination letter. “That shows amazing talent and intelligence.”

JoLynn Woollard was the sophomore awardee. She was nominated by Miranda MacLean. In her nomination letter, MacLean said Woollard’s “boisterous personality lights up my room” and that she’s happy to be a part of Woollard’s educational journey.

“From the first day of class, she makes herself available for help,” MacLean wrote in her nomination letter. “It doesn't matter who it is, if you need help with something, JoJo is your girl.”

Junior Warren Farver was the third student recognized. He was nominated by Derek Sturvist, who described Farver as a “model student” who produces high quality work.

“He leads by example and fosters a mutual respect with his classmates regardless of whether or not they have anything obviously in common,” Sturvist wrote in his nomination letter. “He treats me and other students with mutual respect but also has a warmth and humor.”

Senior Colton Cunningham was nominated by Zach Wright. In the nomination letter, Wright said Cunningham approached him about starting a finance club at the high school and helped do the research necessary to get the club up and running. He also participates in high school athletics and plans to enlist in the Air Force after graduation.

“Colton is an excellent representative of our school and community,” Wright wrote.

The last student recognized was Kara Sanders, a senior at Inverness Academy who was named the academy's Student of the Month for February. Teacher Macey Morse spoke on behalf of the staff, and said they are proud of the growth they have seen in Sanders over the last few years.

“Kara has stepped into a leadership role and will encourage peers to get to work in class, which we love,” Morse said. “Not only has Kara been diligent about her schoolwork, she's also a very kind and caring young lady. She gets along well with her peers and always wants to be helpful whether it is a student or staff member.”
