Art lovers, get your motors running!

"Sweet Rides: The Art of Transportation Award Exhibit" will have an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Crossland Gallery, 500 W. Paisano Drive. The show will close May 20, the El Paso Art Association said in a news release.

The exhibit will feature paintings, photography, sculpture, mixed media and other creations by more than 50 artists from El Paso, Las Cruces, Deming and Fort Hancock, including students from the University of Texas at El Paso and area high schools, organizers said in the news release.

Contemporary painter and UTEP associate professor of art Tom Birkner will judge the "Sweet Rides" show. Birkner has offered to use his honorarium for judging to purchase art supplies for talented students.

There also will be a memorial tribute for Carmen Navar Cadenhead’s late husband, Richard Cadenhead. The photographer was known as a "sweet rides" enthusiast who built vintage cars, the news release said. The opening will showcase some vintage cars. Navar Cadenhead, her sister-in-law Teri Cadenhead Buess and brother-in-law Christopher Buess donated for two memorial awards for artists in Richard Cadenhead’s honor.

Also, the El Paso Locomotives Soccer Team has donated four game tickets and a signed soccer ball to be given to one artist.

The Crossland Gallery is regularly open from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The association also will celebrate Last Thursdays Gallery Night from 5 to 8 p.m. April 27, as well as El Paso Art Association Nonprofit Recognition Night at the El Paso Locomotives soccer game at 7 p.m. May 13, the news release said.
