Check out the new Library of Things at the Wayne County Library

What can a library card get you? How about 3D printers, hotspots, cake pans, lawn games and more.

Most people know libraries can save hundreds, even thousands of dollars annually depending on reading habits. Wayne County Public Library offers more than books and always is on the lookout for ways to support patrons in pursuing their interests, furthering their education and providing entertainment.

In 2022, the Wayne County Public Library conducted a community survey, according to a news release. The community is full of curious and eager learners of all ages, who most often use the library for programming, browsing collections and learning opportunities. It was indicated the community would like to learn more about maker services, up-to-date technologies and new hobbies.

With those goals in mind Wayne County Public Library introduced the Library of Things, a collection of gadgets, tools, games and other equipment that can be checked out for free with a library card, according to the release. Divided into categories like technology, games and toys, kitchen things, crafty things, home improvement and outdoor things, there is something for everyone.

Some of the most popular items are cake pans, tabletop games for adults and children, toys, 3D printers, hot spots, Chromebooks and lawn games. The Chromebook and hotspot bundles were made available through the Emergency Connectivity Fund of the American Rescue Act Plan of 2021 to help schools and libraries support remote learning.

Patrons can save money using the Library of Things to try before they buy, or by borrowing something they may only need to use once or a few times. The LOT also provides people with the opportunity to try out a new hobby or interest that may otherwise be too expensive, according to the release.

For example, through a donation by the Romich Foundation Makerspace, patrons can borrow a 3D printer through the LOT. Library staff will walk people through using the machine.

The collection can be browsed online and holds can be placed on the items through the webpage at https://wcpl.info/content/library-things-0 using a library card. Some collections, including toys and games, are found at the library in person. Borrowing items from the Library of Things is free.

To get a library card, stop by any library location, call 330-262-0916 or fill out an application at https://wcpl.info/about/policies/card/request. To apply for a card, the person needs identification with a current mailing address such as a driver’s license, state ID or checkbook. Cards are available for individuals of all ages.
