There is never a shortage of things to do during the Halloween season in the Wichita area, with activities ranging from long-running haunted attractions to family fun favorites like Botanica’s carved pumpkin extravaganza and Old Cowtown’s Halloween weekend to brand new events like a concert featuring haunting music played by candlelight.

Here’s a monster guide of activities ranging from all ages and family-friendly to grown-ups-only events offering spirits of the liquid kind.

ALL AGES AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY

Haunted Selfie House, The Selfie Spot, 1811 E. Douglas. 4-9 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturdays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays through the end of October. Book a one-hour time slot online to get your selfies at more than 20 selfie stations decorated with spooky themes, including coffins that you can settle into and couches occupied by skeletons. Regular admission: $20 for ages 13 and older, $10 ages 5-12, free for ages 4 and under with an adult.

The Selfie Spot is also offering specialty events for both kids and adults. A two-hour Witches Tea Party with the Sanderson Sisters trio as special guests happens at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8; tickets are $30 per person. Its two, one-hour Little Monster Mash Kids parties, which will include music and dancing, crafts, cookies, and trick or treating, takes place Saturday, Oct. 28, with start times of 1 and 2 p.m. Admission is $15 per person with children ages 2 and under free. Saturday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. are reserved for adults 21 and older. The Selfie Spot also added adult murder mystery nights to its offerings this season that sold out quickly, but you may be able to find tickets posted on the business’ Facebook page by purchasers who now can’t make it. Pumpkins at the Park, Tanganyika Wildlife Park, 1800 S. Hawkins Lane, Goddard, 6-10 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 30 through Oct. 28. Billed as an all-ages event, this annual attraction features escape rooms, creepy crawlers, candy and craft stations, laser tag, a haunted hayride, stage shows and other activities. This is billed as an all-ages event since there are several events for those ages 12 and under, a couple of activities targeted for teens and concession bars for the adults. Admission: $22 for ages 3 and older, $10 for toddlers 3 and younger who want to trick or treat; 50% off admission on the Sept. 30 opening night. Add-on pricing for zombie laser tag and escape rooms. Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, Botanica, 701 N. Amidon, Oct 5-7, 13 and 14, ticketed event with hourly admissions running from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Doors close at 10. Along with enjoying the creative skills of volunteers who carved more than 1,000 jack-o-lanterns on display, other activities include aerial performances, a petting zoo, music by DJ Carbon and a Haunted Woodland Walk. Admission: $15 nonmembers ages 12 and older with a $3 discount for members, $10 youth ages 3-11, kids 2 and under free. Golf cart tours of $125 for up to five guests, with a $100 minimum available. Halloween Hall, Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays and weekends, with extended hours to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 6 through 31. Billed as “where pixels meet pumpkins,” the Halloween Hall exhibition includes interactive games with a Halloween twist, like stomping a zombie’s hand before it can grab your toes, sweeping away a pile of ones with a wave of your hand, gobbling up marbles and more. The games use projection and motion sensors. Multiple games and experiences are on loan from a popular Albuquerque interactive attraction called the Electric Playhouse, which has gone viral online. BooFest, Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean, 5:30 p.m. Saturdays in October. This Halloween-themed party for kids will feature liquid nitrogen treats, including cold cereal puffs that will transform your breath into dragon’s breath and a scavenger hunt in the Kansas in Miniature exhibition. Costumes are encouraged but avoid costumes that can be scary or harmful to others; no gore, weapons or fake blood. Fall Fridays, Bradley Fair Plaza, 1900 N. Rock Road. Two daytime and two evening events, which are fundraisers for Storytime Village, are planned for Fridays in October. Pick a pumpkin from Trader Joe’s and decorate it from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 6. From 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 13, decorate cookies from Bakesale Treat Parlor. Come in costume to win a prize at the Boo Bash, 6-7 p.m. Oct. 20. On Oct. 27, “The Addams Family” 2019 animated movie will be shown; the event starts at 6 p.m. with the movie starting around sunset. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to watch the movie. All events include Halloween treats from Trader Joe’s and crafting. Cost: Each event is $5 per child, pre-registration required. With Wichita schools not in session on Friday, Oct. 13, families can take advantage of three different, free Halloween-themed events at three library branches, suitable for different age groups. Make & Take: Spooky Bookmarks, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Evergreen branch, 2601 N. Arkansas Ave.; this is a drop-in crafting event for ages 4-11. STEM for Kids: Bubbling Cauldron Bath Bombs, 2:30-3:30 p.m. Rockwell Library, 5939 E. Ninth St.; kids ages 7-12 can make bath bombs in a cauldron. Just Write! Spooky Short Story Contest for Teens, 3-4:30 p.m. Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. Second St.. Budding horror or spooky story authors ages 13-18 can bring their short stories of 2,000 words or less and do a reading of their work. Advance registration is required. Dinosaurs after Dark, Field Station Dinosaurs, 2999 N. Rock Road, Derby, 6:30-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and 21. This year’s Dinosaurs after Dark is a one-weekend, two-nights-only event. It emphasizes spooky not scary elements, with a 10-acre trail where true-to-size dinosaur replicas glow in the dark and a new Raptor Maze. Other activities include a fossil dig site, Jurassic golf, trick-or-treat stations, face painting and games. Hay, Hooves and Halloween, Old Cowtown Museum, 1865 Museum Blvd., 2-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22. The headless horseman from the Ichabod Crane story rides the streets and zombie cowboys wander about, while kids trick or treat for candy. It’s also the perfect time to hear the stories behind the ghosts who haunt some of the museum’s historic buildings while kids trick or treat for candy. Spooky Night of Treasures: A Wichita Halloween Experience, Museum of World Treasures, 835 E. First St., 6-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27. The museum’s annual fundraiser is set in a spooky atmosphere with live performers doing historical hauntings. Costumes encouraged. Suitable for teens with parental discretion and supervision. Living Wax Museum, Monikahouse, 1121 N. Bitting, 5-7:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday, Oct. 27-29. Local artists re-create known real people, some living and some dead, in creative costumes and vignettes in this 1887 Victorian house in Riverside. Visitors are encouraged to come in costumes depicting historical figures as well. Live music follows the museum hours, from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person.

Costume contest and trick or treat at Klausmeyer Farm and Pumpkin Patch, 8135 S. 119th St. West, Clearwater, 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28 and 29. This popular Wichita-area pumpkin patch once again is ending its season with costume contests and trick-or-treat days. Check out the other activities at the patch like pig races, a Farm Safari ride to feed donkeys, horses and an alpaca, a hay bale maze, playground and more. Admission: $10 for farm and pumpkin patch, $13 for farm, pumpkin patch and maze combo, free for ages 2 and under. Some activities require additional purchase. 5th annual Halloween Hootenanny, Cedar Creek Farm & Pumpkin Patch, 6100 N. 119th St. West, Maize, 5- 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Another pumpkin patch, which made a top six list of Kansas pumpkin patches by the travel site onlyinyourstate.com, is closing its season with a special trick-or-treat event. Along with all of the pumpkin patch activities, including hay bale characters, a petting zoo, pony rides and a corn maze, and candy stations will be set up for the event. Spooky Bus Tour, beginning and ending at River City Brewery, 150 N. Mosley, 7 & 9 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 30 through Nov. 4; some tours are already sold out. Cost: $30. The Wichita-based paranormal investigation team Road Trip Paranormal guides this tour around Wichita, stopping by some of the haunts they’ve investigated. Owner Jason Roberts said they’ve investigated neighborhoods such as Delano, where they’ve encountered a little boy and the former saloon owner Red Beard from the infamous 1873 shootout with fellow saloon proprietor Rowdy Joe, as well other locations, including the former Hillside Baptist Church and the Orpheum Theatre. Due to the nature of the stories about shadow figures and full-body apparitions they’ve encountered, the suggested ages are 16 and older; minors must be accompanied by adults. Haunted Hops, Botanica, 701 N. Amidon, 6-10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. For the first time, Botanica has scheduled an adults-only night for the over 21 crowd to stroll through the gardens decorated for its Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular. Local and regional breweries will serve craft beers and hard ciders, plus there will be cocktails, mocktails and small bites. Live music will be provided by Bottoms Up and DJ Carbon. Don’t worry about missing the KC Chiefs vs. Broncos game — there will be several spaces set up with TV screens. The event includes all the same activities for the family version of the Jack-O-Lantern including fire dancers, aerial acrobatics, a petting zoo and the Haunted Woodland Walk. Wicked Pairings, Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean, 7-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20. Visit 13 stations for seasonal drinks, sweets and eats based on traditional Halloween treats; guests are advised to eat a hearty meal or snack beforehand. You can wear costumes or festive attire. “Beetlejuice,” 7 p.m. Oct. 19, Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. The 1988 fantasy horror comedy, directed by Tim Burton, stars Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a recently deceased couple who haunt their former home and contact the obnoxious Beetlejuice, played by Michael Keaton, to try to scare away the new homeowners. “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” It’s time to do the time warp again with this cult classic film that has become a traditional showing at the Augusta Historic Theatre and Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre. “The Hollow” by Agatha Christie, Wichita Community Theatre, 258 N. Fountain, 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday matinees Oct. 26-Nov. 5. It’s not exactly a Halloween-themed play but a murder mystery written by the Queen of Crime. Based on her 1946 book of the same name, Christie wrote the play, about a romantic weekend that turns criminal on an English estate, in 1951. HAUNTED ATTRACTIONS

Klausmeyer Farm Haunted Package, 8135 S. 119th St. West, Clearwater, 7- 10 p.m. Saturdays through the end of October. Activities include zombie paintball where participants ride a trailer and are chased by zombies, Barn of Fear and a haunted maze. The Haunted Cannery, 10001 NW U.S. 77 near El Dorado (at Walter’s Pumpkin Patch), 7:30-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays until the end of October. For 20 years, the Walters have been setting up this attraction, which primarily takes place in a four-story canning elevator that visitors can reach by either a hayrack ride or an upgraded “hell-bound” ambulance or closed-lid rolling casket ride. Werewolves, vampires, zombies, clowns, chainsaw-wielding maniacs and other creatures will try their best to scare you. General admission includes the hayride, the Haunted Cannery and the Lunatic Asylum attractions. Tickets: $27, $57 for the RIP ticket; “scaredy-pants” upgrade for $5. Field of Screams, Prairie Pines, 4055 N. Tyler Road, Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 29 and 30, and Nov. 3 and 4; Fridays-Sundays through Oct. 29, plus Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 30 and 31. Gates open at 7 p.m. with the attraction opening at dusk. Organizers set the scene for this attraction around an extensive tale —that can be read online —about a cult-like family, suspected in the disappearances of locals, who return every fall to their land “where even the fields are sick.” There’s also an escape shack activity. Limited, timed tickets sold online only at scaryprairiepines.com. Tickets: $25 for Fridays and Saturdays, $20 for all other days; escape shack pricing is $30 for up to three people and $40 for groups of four to six people. Wicked Island at OJ Watson, 3022 S. McLean, 8 p.m.- midnight, Fridays and Saturdays starting Sept. 29 through end of October (weather permitting). Ticket sales start at 7:30 p.m. and park gates close at 11:30 p.m. Take a trek through the island in this popular Wichita park that becomes scary and sinister at night, with some added help from organizers. Admission: $30 for adults and $25 for children 12 and under (must be accompanied by an adult) for timed tickets purchased online, $40 for a fast pass to the head of the line. 13 Sinister Souls Haunted House, 527 E. Harry, 7-midnight Fridays and Saturdays starting Sept. 29 through the end of October, plus Sunday through Tuesday, Oct. 29-31. Back for a second year, this 30-minute-long experience takes place in a 10,000-square-foot indoor space haunted by more sinister souls portrayed by live actors. Warehouse of Terrors, 1640 W. 140th Ave. North, Milton. 8-11 p.m. Saturdays through the end of October. An old furniture store is remade into a warehouse of terrors. Not recommended for children 8 and younger. Admission: $30. More info: 316-371-4532

Labyrinth of Terror, Winfield Fairgrounds, 1105 W. Ninth Ave., 7:30-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays the last three weekends of October.; 7:30-10 p.m. Thursday and Sundays, starting Oct. 15. This attraction is opening for its 13th season on Friday, Oct. 13, with a special price of $13. Look for the hearse and giant skeleton outside this attraction, which is featuring some new-to-the-attraction animatronics and “some other little surprises,” said owner Mike Steiner, who started the venture in his backyard. For a less scary experience without the live actors, visit Wednesday, Oct. 18 and 25, from 7:30-10 p.m., when admission is just $5. It’s an option that has gotten very popular, Steiner said.
