Birth of the cheeseburger

There are numerous claims as to who created the first cheeseburger, however, the most popular is a teenager from Southern California.

The creator of the cheeseburger was 16-year-old Lionel Sternberger, whose father owned a sandwich shop in Pasadena, according to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

One day in 1924, Sternberger put a slice of American cheese on one of his father’s hamburgers and called it the “cheese hamburger.”

One decade later, a Kaelin’s restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky gave the sandwich the name “cheeseburger,” which was trademarked in 1935 by Louis Ballast of Humpty Dumpty Drive-In.
