A photo of a huntsman spider devouring a pygmy possum has gone viral, piquing the interest of arachnologists and freaking pretty much everybody else out. The picture was captured by a married couple at a ski lodge in Mount Field National Park, Tasmania: Justine Latton first spotted the grisly sight while fixing a door with her husband.

The pic is now doing the rounds on Twitter. Anyone who suffers from arachnophobia might want to turn away now...

This truly is the stuff of nightmares. At first glance, it resembles an uncanny monster with the body of a rodent and the many spindly legs of an arachnid. It's only when you look more closely (if you can bear to) that you are fully able to discern that they are two separate creatures-and that the spider is eating an animal its own size. How can you see that and go back to your everyday life as if everything is the same?!

Fortunately, the image isn't quite as nightmarish as it first seems. As its name suggests, the pygmy possum is an especially tiny variety: Latton recalls it being approximately the size of a walnut. Which means the carnivorous spider isn't quite as large as it first appears in the photo.

"It’s a good-sized spider," Bryan Fry, professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Queensland, told the Washington Post. "It’s not some sort of Godzilla spider." He estimated that this spider, a fairly common breed in Australia, would span around nine inches. Which isn't B-movie monster size, but still on the large side for us. Especially considering the huntsman is known for its speed. No thank you.
