Check your pockets. Multi-million winning Mega Millions lottery ticket was sold in SC

Nobody won the nine-figure grand prize in Friday’s Mega Millions drawing, but if you bought a ticket in South Carolina be sure to check your numbers. Somebody won $2 million on a ticket sold in Orangeburg, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said Monday in a news release.

The winning Mega Millions game was purchased for $2 at the Gaz-Bah gas station/convenience store at 951 Chestnut St., according to the release. That’s near the South Carolina State University campus.

The winning ticket matched all five of the numbers on the white balls that were drawn, lottery officials said. Because the person who bought the ticket paid an additional dollar for the Megaplier option, the prize was doubled when that number was a 2, according to the release.

The winning numbers from last Friday’s drawing were 10, 24, 48, 51, 66 and Megaball: 15.

The winner has 180 days to claim the prize, according to lottery officials.

The winner will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The odds of matching five white balls for the $1,000,000 prize are 1-in-12,607,306, according to the release.

“Sign the back of your ticket and put it in a safe location until you’re ready to come forward to claim the prize,” lottery officials said.

The Gaz-Bah convenience store will receive a commission of $20,000 when the winning ticket is claimed and turned in to lottery officials, according to the release.

In addition to the $2,000,000 winning game, more than 9,600 other players in South Carolina won prizes in the July 14 drawing, according to the release.

Because nobody won the grand prize on Friday night, the Mega Millions jackpot is estimated to be $640 million when the next drawing is held Tuesday night. That’s the seventh-largest grand prize in Mega Millions history.
