CHEBOYGAN — The Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau has officially found its new executive director after hiring Carole Yeck.

Yeck was hired by the chamber just over a week ago and has been going through training to get ready to step into the role in mid-June.

"I am very excited for Carole and for what she can bring to Cheboygan," said Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Second Vice President and Secretary J L Sumpter. "I am confident Carole will use her lifelong experience in our community to enhance its presence in Northern Michigan."

The chamber's former executive director Polly Schneider stepped down from the position in March. Her last day with the chamber was March 23.

When Schneider resigned from her position, the vacancy was posted immediately and the chamber board of directors worked with a consulting firm to help keep the chamber office open, while searching for a replacement director.

Multiple candidates applied for the open position and after completing interviews, the board of directors felt Yeck would be best suited as the next executive director.

"We had probably about 10 people apply for the position," said Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors President Bryan Groff. "We're just excited for her to get her feet wet in her new position."

Yeck is very involved in the Cheboygan community, including being a member of the Parent Teacher Organization at Bishop Baraga Catholic Schools and the coach of the Cheboygan Junior Chiefs Cheerleaders. She is also familiar with nonprofits, on the volunteer side, as she has volunteered with several organizations.

Her family owns Yeck's Family Drive In Restaurant on Mackinaw Avenue and she has also owned her own daycare.

"We're excited to have her on board. She comes with a great background in the community and we're looking forward for her to succeed in her position," said Groff.

Scott Herceg, who served as the chamber's executive director for many years, will be training Yeck for her new position. He is running her through programs he offers through his private consulting firm, as well as those he offers as classes at North Central Michigan College. These classes will get her familiar with budgets, how to interact with the board of directors, bylaws and get her ready to take the reins when she officially starts on June 13.

"I am ecstatic about Carole stepping into the role of executive director. She embodies so many wonderful qualities that will enable her to easily continue the chamber’s mission of enhancing and supporting our business community and membership," said Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Treasurer Marianne Ridings. "Cheboygan is truly fortunate to have her."
