The Akron-area is home to world-class craft beer makers.

HiHo Brewing Co. in Cuyahoga Falls won its first-ever award in the 2022 World Beer Cup competition, with Hoppin' Frog Brewery in Akron also taking home a medal.

They were among 15 Ohio breweries who won in the event that involves judging breweries from around the world. That was a state record total, according to the Ohio Craft Brewers Association. Judging took place over nine days, with the awards announced Thursday night.

The Ohio winners were among 10,542 entries from 2,493 brewers in 57 countries; the competition took place in Minneapolis. This was the first World Cup since the competition was cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Brewers Association, which represents about 5,600 U.S. breweries.

HiHO took home a silver award for its Touchdown Brown Ale in the American-Style Brown Ale category.

Hoppin' Frog Brewery took home a silver award for its Frogichlaus Swiss-style Celebration Lager in the German-Style Doppelbock or Eisbock category.

Other Ohio winners

MadTree Brewing in Cincinnati and Columbus Brewing Company won two awards each.

MadTree won gold for Ziegler, its Oktoberfest lager, in the American-style Amber Lager category. The brewery won silver for its Legendary Lager.

Columbus Brewing Company's Crocodile Tongue won gold in the Mixed Culture Brett Beer category. It took a bronze for its lager.

• Fat Head's Brewery, Middleburg Heights: Gold for Goggle Fogger, in the South German-style Hefeweizen category.

• Big Ash Brewing, Cincinnati: Silver for Porter's Porter, in the International Dark Lager category.

• Fretboard Brewing, Blue Ash: Silver for Crazy Train in the Belgian-Style Ale or French-Style Ale category.

• Immigrant Son Brewery, Lakewood: Silver for Common Ale in the English Mild or Bitter category.

• Wolf's Ridge Brewing, Columbus: Silver for Daybreak in the Coffee Beer category.

• Gemut Biergarten, Columbus: Bronze for Woden's Hunt Dunkel, in the European Dark Lager category.

• Inside the Five Brewing, Sylvania: Bronze for Megaphone, in the Irish-Style Red Ale category.

• Narrow Path Brewing, Loveland: Bronze for Restless Seas in the German-Style Sour Ale category.

• Sibling Revelry Brewing, Westlake: Bronze for Red in the Extra Special Bitter category.

"Our independent breweries continue to show that we're making some of the world's best beer right here in Ohio," Mary MacDonald, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association, said in a news release. "Exceptional beer is the foundation upon which our breweries are building up their communities, supporting jobs and contributing to local causes all over the state."
