Dahlonega is "America's Best Small Wine, Beer, + Spirits Town" according to a new Travel + Leisure ranking.

Known for its history in gold mining, location among the Appalachian Mountains, and being home to the University of North Georgia, Dahlonega is a popular getaway location in the southeast.

"With a thriving wine culture and a picturesque backdrop of mountains and foothills, Dahlonega, Georgia, is a pleasant escape to somewhere surprisingly unexpected," the ranking reads.

The town is home to several wineries, including Montaluce Winery and Wolf Mountain Vineyards, and breweries, such as 52 West Brewing and Dahlonega Brewery.

Dahlonega is located a little more than an hour north of Atlanta and is close to other mountain getaway destinations like Lake Lanier, Blue Ridge and Elijay.
