Cheese Capital Jazz & Blues Crawl returns in Plymouth, plus more Sheboygan County news in weekly dose

SHEBOYGAN - The Plymouth Arts Center’s Cheese Capital Jazz & Blues Crawl for the Arts will be 4:30 p.m. to midnight Aug. 11 in the Courtyard and Greatroom of the PAC, 520 E. Mill St., Plymouth, and at seven Plymouth clubs and restaurants.

The 19th annual live music extravaganza and fundraiser will bring11 bands to participating venues. Admission is a $10 donation for a wristband, with donations going to the PAC. The wristband is also a passport to ride a trolley free to all the venues between 6:30 and 10:30 p.m.

Here is the entertainment schedule and list of participating venues:

  • Arts Center Courtyard: Chalk Down Trio, 4:30-6 p.m., and Talk of the Town Dixieland Jazz, 6-9 p.m.;

  • Arts Center Greatroom: Keys & Beats Duo, 4:30-6 p.m., and Tracy Hannemann Group, 6-9 p.m.;

  • Plank Road Distillery: Jazz N’ More, 6:30-9:30 p.m.;

  • PJ Campbell’s at The Depot: Smooth Groove, 6:30-9:30 p.m.;

  • 52 Stafford Irish Guesthouse & Restaurant: Tonic Roots, 6:30-9:30 p.m.;

  • Big Billy’s Bar & Grill: Paul Sucherman Trio, 7:30-10:30 p.m.;

  • Antonio’s: SkyHouse, 8-11 p.m.;

  • Plymouth Tap: Robert Allen Jr. Band, 8:30-11:30 p.m.; and

  • Wild Shots Pub & Grill: Maple Road Blues Band, 9 p.m.-midnight.

The PAC’s Bourbon Street Café will feature a menu catered by Pic-A-Deli until 9 p.m. And the public is invited to view a new art show by CoPA (Coalition of Photographic Arts-Milwaukee) or to place a bid at a silent auction consisting of original fine art, gift baskets, gift certificates, and unique gifts donated by PAC members and friends and area businesses. Bidding on the silent auction closes at 9 p.m. and you need not be present to win.

Juried exhibition of Coalition of Photographic Arts to open at Gallery 110 North

Plymouth Arts Center’s Gallery 110 North will present “Harmony & Dissonance,” a juried exhibition featuring the works of the Coalition of Photographic Arts, from Aug. 11 to Oct. 6.

The public is invited to attend an opening reception for the show from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18. Awards and comments will be presented at 6 p.m. Musical entertainment for the evening will be provided by the Gypsy Swing Chicks, Kate Pearce, Karen Mani and Beth Munns.

Gallery 110 North is in the Plymouth Arts Center, 520 E. Mill St., in downtown Plymouth. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays-Sundays. Admission is always free. More info: 920-892-8409 or plymoutharts.org.

Sheboygan Theatre Company unveils 90th season lineup

Sheboygan Theater Company, a local community theater celebrating its 90th season this year, has unveiled its lineup for the 2023-24 season.

The company will bring four plays to the Leslie W. Johnson Theatre on the Horace Mann Middle School campus: “The Little Mermaid,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Into the Woods” and “Rent.”

In addition, The Studio Players will bring “Misery” and “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead” to the smaller stage at 8th Street Alehouse.

The season will start Sept. 29-Oct. 7 with “The Little Mermaid,” directed by Robert Mintz (rated G).

“A Christmas Carol,” directed by Alex Freeman, will be performed Dec. 1-9 (rated PG).

“Into the Woods,” directed by Ken Risch, will be performed Feb. 16-24, 2024 (rated PG-13).

And “Rent,” directed by Anthony Bruno, will conclude the season May 10-18, 2024 (rated R).

STC’s second stage Studio Players will offer “Misery,” directed by Michelle Bestul, in the fall of 2023 and “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead” in spring 2024.

Sheboygan brings powerboat racing competition, exhibition Aug. 11-13

Mercury Racing, with Powerboat P1 and F1 Powerboat, will be in Sheboygan Aug. 11-13 for its inaugural competition and exhibition weekend. According to a news release, the event brings together two powerboat race series on the same weekend in the same location for the first time ever.

Kickstart the weekend with a nighttime block party in downtown Sheboygan Aug. 11 and then roll into Aug. 12 and 13 at South Pier to watch practice, qualifying and toe-to-toe racing.

The Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge, a festival and celebration of powerboat racing, will feature the top categories of U.S. powerboat racing including the UIM Class 1 World Championship, F1 Powerboat Championship, and various offshore racing classes.

More than 40 race teams are expected to participate with competitors from around the world, including Australia, Italy, Sweden, Canada and Norway.

Fourth annual Walk for Unity & Community Barbecue will be Aug. 19

Sheboygan Police Department and other community organizations will celebrate unity with the fourth annual Walk for Unity & Community Barbecue Aug. 19.

Those attending can gather at Fountain Park starting at 10 a.m. They will have the chance to write a message of peace and unity on a ribbon prior to collectively walking to Peace Park, where they will tie the ribbons onto trees and hear words from various community organizations prior to heading back to Fountain Park, where they will celebrate with a free lunch, performances, activities and community resources.

Acuity Health Challenge raises more than $12K to benefit neonatal intensive care

Sheboygan-based Acuity Insurance announced the 2023 Acuity Health Challenge raised more than $12,000 to benefit the Acuity Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Acuity Birthing Center of Aurora Medical Center-Sheboygan County.

In its 11th year, the Acuity Health Challenge featured a 5K or 2-mile run/walk. More than 550 people completed the challenge this year, an increase of more than 20% from last year.

Jack Gasparick took first place in the men’s division and Maggie Behler captured the top spot in the women’s division.

In addition to the challenge, participants and spectators were welcomed to the event by Acuity’s Vendor Village, which hosted a variety of local vendors who help sponsor the goody bags provided to participants of the challenge.
