The Cheltenham Festival is back for 2023 with a thrilling week of racing lined up in the Cotswolds for what is known as ‘The Greatest Show on Turf’, as racegoers descend on the iconic course.

The Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup bookend the four-day meeting as perhaps the two highest-profile Grade 1 races, with Constitution Hill triumphing in the Champion Hurdle on Tuesday, showing his class to win at a canter after starting as the overwhelming, heavily-backed favourite.

Meanwhile, Rachael Blackmore returns to Cheltenham looking to create more history after an astounding win to retain the Gold Cup in 2022 –a victory that helped the Irish trainers triumph handily over their British counterparts to easily land the prestigious Prestbury Cup, with a mighty 18 wins compared to just 10 for the home horses.

The festival provides a massive £274m boost to the local economy, a study from the University of Gloucestershire has found, and while organisers will be hoping the rain holds off, it promises to be an exciting week of racing regardless.

Cheltenham Festival LIVE: Results on Day 3

2.10 - Pertemps Network Final

14:16 , Michael Jones

The whole field have clustered back to together with Burrows Park and Bear Ghylls still setting the pace. One mile to go and two hurdles left.

It’s anyone’s race yet.

2.10 - Pertemps Network Final

14:15 , Michael Jones

Maxxum is near the back as the field reign in Burrows Park. Green Book, Bear Ghylls and The Bosses Oscar are up near the leader as the leap over the next hurdle.

Six to go.

2.10 - Pertemps Network Final

14:13 , Michael Jones

Burrows Park has bombed out ahead of everyone else but he’ll do well to keep this pace up for 3 miles. He’s out in front by about eight lengths.

Eight hurdles to go.

2.10 - Pertemps Network Final

14:12 , Michael Jones

And they’re off! There are 23 runners in this one which means predicting a winner is going to be difficult. After a false start, the field set off from a standing start.

Paul Nicholls praises Stage Star

14:09 , Michael Jones

Winning trainer Paul Nicholls spoke to BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra saying: “It has been a tough week so far and a tough couple of years. It’s hard to win here.

“So to win with a horse we believed in, it didn’t go to plan last year, but he’s come back really good this year. It was a good race and he put it to bed really well.

“We thought he would run really well, the last run was really good here with a big weight.

“He’s an improving horse and we need him to take it to the next level. Today was a good test.”

2.10 - Pertemps Network Final latest odds

14:06 , Michael Jones

2.10 - Pertemps Network Final

14:02 , Michael Jones

Next up is the Pertemps Network Final which is the first of three difficult handicaps on today’s card.

David Pipe’s Thanksforthehelp, won the Chepstow qualifier last month with plenty in hand and is a solid favourite at around 7-2, while Maxxum, a 16-length winner at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting, is near him in the market.

The most recent winner to have also won their qualifier was Fingal Bay in 2014 so it may pay to look instead for a horse that ran well without winning.

The Changing Man, who finished second in a well-run Haydock qualifier in February, could be a shout.

Stage Star wins for Paul Nicholls

13:57 , Michael Jones

It’s been a long time since trainer Paul Nicholls had a winner at Cheltenham. His last one was Politologue in the 2020 Champion Chase.

That win was also jockey Harry Cobden’s first at the festival since 2019. Well played Stage Star.

Harry Cobden rides his first winner at Cheltenham since 2019. Here’s what he had to say after riding Stage Star to victory:

“It’s lovely. I thought it was easy when I rode my first winner here at the age of 18. The second came quickly but since then it’s been a four-year drought.”

STAGE STAR WINS THE TURNERS NOVICES’ CHASE

13:37 , Michael Jones

Mighty Potter kicks into gear but Harry Cobden has Stage Star too far in front. He led the whole way around and steers Stage Star over the line!

1.30 - Turners Novices Chase

13:36 , Michael Jones

Notlongtillmay makes a move to push Stage Star but the leader leaps over the last just in front. Mighty Potter has work to do down the final stretch having been wedged in between Balco Coastal and James Du Berlais.

1.30 - Turners Novices Chase

13:34 , Michael Jones

James Du Berlais is in the mix now too and joins Mighty Potter and Balco Coastal in the group just behind the leading duo. The jockeys are just positioning themselves for a final push with three fences to jump.

1.30 - Turners Novices Chase

13:33 , Michael Jones

The 33/1 Notlongtillmay has moved up into second place ahead of Balco Coastal but Stage Star continues to set the pace. Appreciate It hasn’t made any huge inroads into the field but is running nicely.

1.30 - Turners Novices Chase

13:22 , Michael Jones

Mighty Potter is the favourite going into the opening event on Day 3 with Gordon Elliott fans not deterred after stablemate Gerri Colombe finished second yesterday.

Appreciate It is arguably the best contender but he’s been lightly-raced since his devastating 24-length success in the 2021 Supreme Novice Hurdle though is likely to be suited by the step up to this trip.

Banbridge’s 10-length second behind El Fabiolo in February was boosted when the winner followed up in Tuesday’s Arkle.

Balco Coastal could prove to be the best of the Brits, having finished close behind Gerri Colombe at Sandown in February, but this looks to be Mighty Potter’s to lose.

Oli Bell: “[On Shishkin]: Really impressed in the Ascot chase and looks to be really at home over this trip.”

Alex Hammond’: “[On Shishkin]: Looked right back to his best when upped in trip in the Ascot Chase.”

Ruby Walsh: “This race is just about Shishkin, it’s as simple as that.”

Who will win the Stayers’ Hurdle?

12:27 , Michael Jones

All eyes are on the 3.30pm Stayers’ Hurdle this afternoon but who do the experts think will win the race?

Oli Bell says: “[Home by the Lee] Has the best form in the book this season and seems to be improving.” and Ed Chamberlin agrees adding: “[Home by the Lee has] Not got the credit he deserves.”

Two for Home by the Lee then but Ruby Walsh thinks differently saying:

“The rain for me makes this Teahupoo’s. This is a huge day for Davy Russell in his comeback, and these are his best chances to win with Might Potter, in the 1:30pm, and Teahupoo.

“In the rain he’s [Teahupoo] just a better horse on soft ground, and the more rain that falls, the better his chance will be.

“I was giving Home By The Lee a chance most of the year, but unless it dries up considerably, I’m with Teahupoo.”

The bets are coming in

12:21 , Michael Jones

In the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle at 3.30pm there have been a flurry of bets seemingly in favour of one horse as Gold Tweet has seen a big market move with its odds plummeting.

Teahupoo is still the favourite but Johnny Charron’s horse is almost pushing its way into the place as second favourite. Could it be the one to watch later on?

Gavin Sheehan on Glimpse of Gala

12:14 , Michael Jones

BetVictor ambassador and jockey Gavin Sheehan rides three horses this afternoon and is first up on the 33/1 outside shot Glimpse of Gala at 2.10 pm.

He said: “My first ride on Thursday comes on Glimpse Of Gala in the Pertemps. This is actually my second time riding her, I had a spin on her in a bumper at the November meeting a few years ago now!

“She won’t be hindered by the softer ground having won last time out at Warwick on heavy in the qualifier, keeping on strongly to draw clear from Ashtown Lad.

“The cheekpieces go on today and I think she has an each-way chance in what looks like a hot renewal of the Pertemps. As ever in a big field like this, we will need a little luck in running. It’s great to ride for Charlie and fingers crossed we can go well here”.

Rachael Blackmore earns Honeysuckle fairytale ending in horse’s final race before retirement

12:00 , Michael Jones

There were joyous scenes on day one of the Cheltenham Festival when Honeysuckle brought the curtain down on her phenomenal career with an emotional victory in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle.

The sparkle of Henry de Bromhead’s superstar had seemingly been on the wane this term and the decision was made to return the dual Champion Hurdle heroine to the race she first announced herself in at the Festival for her swansong.

And the nine-year-old did not let her adoring public down by showing all the qualities that have made her one of the most loved and admired mares of the modern era.

Sent off the 9-4 joint-favourite, ever-loyal jockey Rachael Blackmore had Honeysuckle positioned in second throughout, tracking the front-running Love Envoi and although the pack swarmed as the field made their way down the hill, the order remained the same until after the last.

A Dream To Share delivers emotional Cheltenham win for handlers young and old

11:35 , Michael Jones

There was a very special conclusion to day two of the Cheltenham Festival when 18-year-old John Gleeson steered John Kiely’s A Dream To Share to a thrilling Weatherbys Champion Bumper success.

The 85-year-old Kiely has won many big races throughout a long and distinguished career in the training ranks, but one notable omission was a victory at the Festival.

He found the perfect ally to fill that void in the unbeaten five-year-old, who was bred and previously owned by ITV and RTE presenter Brian Gleeson - father of jockey John - and his wife Claire.

He headed to Prestbury Park on the back of a win at the Dublin Racing Festival last month, and with new owners, having been snapped up to run in the colours of JP McManus.

But the 7-2 chance remained the mount of the younger Gleeson who produced a ride befitting a man with much more experience than his tender years and someone experiencing the white-hot atmosphere of the Festival for the first time.

Will Shishkin live up to the hype?

11:28 , Michael Jones

One of the most anticipated races today is the Ryanair Chase at 2.50 mainly due to the fact that Shishkin is running in it.

Nicky Henderson’s horse is heavily fancied with the bookies as was the case when he ran last year. However after pulling up in last year’s Champions Chase he’s got something to prove today.

Form could suit the horse on this new course and eveyone fancies him making Shishkin the heavy favourite for the race. Can he live up to the hype this time around?

Rachael Blackmore on her 2.50 runner, Envoi Allen

11:21 , Michael Jones

Jockey Rachael Blackmore, who already has a winner at the festival with Honeysuckle on Tuesday, spoke about the prospects of her horse Envoi Allen who is running in the Ryanair Chase at 2.50 today.

She told Betfair: “I’m looking forward to riding Envoi Allen in the Ryanair Chase on Thursday. He ran no race in the King George at Kempton, it just wasn’t his running, so you just have to put a line through that.

“He was very good in winning the Champion Chase at Down Royal in early November on his debut this season. That was over three miles, but this extended two-and-a-half-mile trip is probably perfect for him.

“Hopefully the ground won’t be too soft, but we move to the New Course on Thursday, so that should help.

“He’s in really good order at home, and I think that he has a good chance. He has won twice at Cheltenham, and we know that he has the ability.”

When is the Grand National?

11:15 , Michael Jones

With the 2023 Cheltenham Festival happening this week, many will be looking to the UK’s most famous horse race, the Grand National.

Last year saw the return of fans to Aintree for the first time since the COVID pandemic, with the races cancelled in 2020 and held behind closed doors in 2021.

But the race came back with a bang as Rachel Blackmore became the first woman to win the National in 2021, while last year leading amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen won riding Noble Yeats, the first seven-year-old horse to win since 1940.

In 2023, the event will take place in mid-April, with the showpiece race headlining three days of racing.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 Grand National Festival:

Willie Mullins responds to Energuemene’s victory in the Queen Mother Champion Chase

10:54 , Michael Jones

Energumene finished third in the Clarence House Chase earlier this year behind pair Editeur Du Gite and Edwardstone who both raced against him in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Trainer Willie Mullins says the horse, and his jockey Paul Townend, had a point to prove when they arrived at Cheltenham on Day 2.

“Paul had a very positive frame of mind going out. He said he was going to jump off up there, he thought everyone was going to be very tight and he wanted to be away fast. That’s the way the race worked out and he had it right.” said Mullins,

“The horse just loved the ground and loved jumping. He was brilliant on the day and Paul was brilliant on him.

“I was way more confident this year than last year because we hadn’t Shishkin to take on and with any improvement from the Clarence House, it was hopefully a case of getting a clear round.

“Paul came home from the Clarence House and he said ‘they won’t beat us again’ and the horse’s work and jumping and everything for the last three weeks has been brilliant, so we just had our fingers crossed for a clear round.

“I was hoping to win, but the way he did it was something else. Hopefully he can hold that sort of form for next year.”

Paul Townend given five-day ban after Energumene victory

10:47 , Michael Jones

Jockey Paul Townend has been given a five-day ban for his winning ride on Energumene in the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival yesterday.

Stewards at the racecourse felt Townend allowed his horse “to drift left handed when insufficiently clear causing interference” and have handed him a five-day ban which won’t start immediately.

Racing fans and pundits felt the suspension was very harsh on Townend.

Energumene defended his Champion Chase crown to become the first back-to-back winner of the day two feature since Altior in 2018 and 2019.

As well as the Gold Cup, punters will be excited to take on plenty of Grade 1 races this week and the action does not stop with plenty of attractive tips and exciting horses as the festival reaches Day 3.

In what could be a wet week at the festival, British trainers hope to hit back after taking a heavy beating to their Irish counterparts last year, conceding the Prestbury Cup 12 months ago with just 10 wins compared to 18 Irish victories.

Energumene retained his Queen Mother Champion Chase crown at the Cheltenham Festival and its owner Tony Bloom, who also owns Brighton and Hove Albion, may have landed the biggest win of the week with the bookies.

There were reports of two bets totalling £600,000 on the horse, which would have returned approximately £830,000.

“He has done me proud. He ran a magnificent race and totally deserved to win. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing horse. He didn’t run at his best last time out but has shown his class today,” said Bloom, who conceded to “having a few quid on”.

“We have a huge game against Crystal Palace tonight so I will focus on that now before Grimsby in the FA Cup this weekend.”
