Cheltenham LIVE: Results, winners and latest updates from Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Festival concludes today after what has been a thrilling week of racing but not before the most prestigious race of the week - the Gold Cup.

There’s time for one more packed race card including seven exciting races to showcase the finest in the sport in the Cotswolds, including the highly-anticipated Gold Cup.

The Irish trainers continue to shine and will hope to triumph once again after landing the Prestbury Cup 12 months ago with a mighty 18 wins compared to just 10 for British-trained horses.

Hewick and Protektorat compete for the lead.

3.30 - Cheltenham Gold Cup

15:35 , Michael Jones

Galopin Des Champs and A Plus Tard are both at the back. Biding their time or off the pace?

Ahoy Senior continues to lead and eases up the pace. Hewick is second.

3.30 - Cheltenham Gold Cup

15:34 , Michael Jones

Stattler pulls up before he completes the first circuit. He was well off the pace at the back and Minella Indo is struggling too.

Ahoy Senior still leads as they pass the grandstand.

Minella Indo is out of the Gold Cup too as he’s pulled up.

3.30 - Cheltenham Gold Cup

15:33 , Michael Jones

3.30 - Cheltenham Gold Cup

And they’re off! Most of these horses seem revved up. Bravemansgame and Ahoy Senior get away well as does Noble Yeats - last year’s Grand National winner.

3.30 - Cheltenham Gold Cup

15:29 , Michael Jones

The horses make their way onto the course. Galopin Des Champs and A Plus Tard are the two main runners. Bravemansgame and Ahoy Senior are both in with a shout too.

But this is the Gold Cup. Anything can happen.

3.30 - Cheltenham Gold Cup

15:24 , Michael Jones

Galopin Des Champs is the favourite with A Plus Tard his closest rival.

Davy Russell is another jockey who’s stepped down from the race. Sam Ewing will ride Conflated instead.

Trainer Dan Skelton on Protektorat’s chances in the Gold Cup:

15:21 , Michael Jones

"Today I am lucky to have chances in early races ahead of the big one, but you have made your team selection, given your team talk and you just let them get on with on with it.

"You have to try to enjoy these days and I know there is nothing more I can do.

"The owners (which includes Sir Alex Ferguson) know they have a big chance, but they know it is sport and anything can happen but pressure is a privilege."

Stay Away Fay wins the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

15:18 , Michael Jones

Here’s Harry Cobden riding Stay Away Fay to victory in the Albert Bartlett:

Mark Walsh won’t race in Gold Cup

15:15 , Michael Jones

Jockey Mark Walsh who just suffered the fall with Corbetts Cross stands down from the Gold Cup. He’s replaced with Nico de Boinville who will ride Minella Indo.

Stay Away Fay wins the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

15:12 , Michael Jones

Winning trainer Paul Nicholls, speaking ITV Racing: “He looks fantastic. He ran how he looked. He jumped really well. There’s lots of improvement to come from him.

“Having had two winners now I am dead relaxed. It makes such a difference.”

Stay Away Fay wins the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

15:09 , Michael Jones

Winning jockey Harry Cobden, speaking to ITV Racing: “I could hear what happened behind me. My horse is very inexperienced, he’s very green but he got his head down.

“This horse stays forever. Great for the boss.”

The Cheltenham Gold Cup

15:06 , Michael Jones

Next up is the big one. Not just today but for the whole week. The Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Rachael Blackmore famously won this race last year with A Plus Tard and returns to try and recover her title but she’ll face strong competition this year.

Stay Away Fay wins the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

15:03 , Michael Jones

Corbetts Cross spotted a gap and tried to dart around the final hurdle. He clattered into the plastic covering which sent jockey Mark Walsh to the deck.

Walsh is up on his feet but looks a bit shaken. The horse seems okay too.

Result:

1. Stay Away Fay - 18/1

2. Affordale Fury - 150/1

STAY AWAY FAY WINS THE ALBERT BARTLETT NOVICES’ HURDLE

14:58 , Michael Jones

Drama right at the end but it’s Stay Away Fay who flies down the final straight to next the victory. Harry Cobden and Paul Nicholls get another win at Cheltenham!

2.50 - Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

14:57 , Michael Jones

Storming towards the last hurdle. Corbett’s Cross hits the fence and crashes out!

Stay Away Fay and Thomas Mor are right in the mix along with a few others.

Who’s going to win this?

2.50 - Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

14:55 , Michael Jones

Corbett’s Cross is travelling well out wide. Rock My Way still leads alongside Embassy Gardens and Thomas Mor now as they come round the bend.

Cheltenham Festival Day 4 race card, runners and full schedule for 2023

14:35 , Michael Jones

Cheltenham Festival saw Rachael Blackmore steer Honeysuckle to an emotional farewell victory on Day 1 before Energumene and Delta Work were among the big-name winners on Day 2.

As well as the Gold Cup, punters will be excited to take on plenty of Grade 1 races this week and the action does not stop after Good Time Jonny won the Pertemps Network Final Hurdle and Sire Du Berlais took the Stayers’ Hurdle.

On Friday, the County Hurdle and the Mares Chase will also be high-profile races, even with the Gold Cup as the main attraction.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival including the full race card and Day 4 schedule for Friday:

Cheltenham race card 2023: Festival runners and full schedule

Faivoir trainer Dan Skelton on his sister-in-law winning the County Hurdle:

14:31 , Michael Jones

“That was brilliant from Bridge. It was a great bit of riding. She doesn’t get as many rides on the big stage because Harry takes precedence but she is more than capable.

“I thought Faivoir would win a big handicap this year.”

Faivoir wins the County Hurdle

14:28 , Michael Jones

Just take a look at how close this win for Faivoir and Bridget Andrews was. What a victory!

Bridget Andrews reacts after win with Faivoir

14:25 , Michael Jones

“Coming here for a ride is just a dream come true. To get a second win at Cheltenham is a dream come true, for the best team I could ever work for.

“As a number two jockey, there’s aren’t many big days. I’m married to Harry [Skelton] but sometimes you want success for yourself.”

Bridget Andrews wins with Faivoir

14:22 , Michael Jones

Jockey Bridget Andrews rode a fantastic race and earns a win for Dan Skelton. It is the second time she has won this race and superbly held off Davy Russell and Pied Piper.

Faivoir wins the County Hurdle

14:20 , Michael Jones

County Hurdle result:

1. Faivoir - 33/1

2. Pied Piper -12/1

3. Filey Bay - 6/1

4. Sharjah - 10/1

5. Ballyadam - 12/1

FAIVOIR WINS THE COUNTY HURDLE

14:17 , Michael Jones

A late move from Faivoir sees him push towards the front as they head over the last. Pied Piper is right up there with him and both horses sprint neck and neck towards the line.

There’s nothing to separate them but Faivoir manages to get his nose in front!

2.10 - County Hurdle

14:14 , Michael Jones

Into the last two jumps and the leading duo continue to go clear but the chasing pack are closing the gap. Highway One O Two is now out in front on his own but Ballyadam is making a charge.

2.10 - County Hurdle

14:13 , Michael Jones

Prairie Dancer stays in front over the first three hurdles and leads by a length ahead of Highway One O Two.

2.10 - County Hurdle

14:11 , Michael Jones

And they’re off! Two miles and eight hurdles to go in the County Hurdle. Prairie Dancer and Highway One O Two take the early lead.

2.10 - County Hurdle

14:09 , Michael Jones

The horses make their way out onto the course. Pembroke has been backed into a favourites tag ahead of Filey Bay and Hunters Yarn.

Will that translate to a win for Dan and Harry Skelton?

Tips from the experts

14:04 , Michael Jones

Ruby Walsh is backing Ballyadam in the 2.10 County Hurdle saying: “If I was going for a tip, I’d be with Ballyadam. I thought he ran well behind Gaelic Warrior and at 25/1, he’s probably overpriced.”

Ballyadam is a Henry De Bromhead trained horse and will be ridden by Rachael Blackmore. Not a bad shout at all really.

Paul Townend previews County Hurdle

13:53 , Michael Jones

Triumph Hurdle winner, Paul Townend, believed he was in with a chance before the race but admits that he’s riding an improving horse in the 2.10 County Hurdle

About Hunters Yarn he said: “He’s a nice type and an improving sort. He is a winner of three bumpers.

“A novice in the handicap is never ideal but he’s had his few runs to qualify for his. We have plenty of weight. State Man won the race last year as a novice off a few pounds lower in the handicap so we will see how much we are improving on what rate we are.

“It’s ultra-competitive though and there is a lot of horses you would make a case for in here.”

Lossiemouth wins the Triumph Hurdle for Willie Mullins

13:50 , Michael Jones

Rather predictably Lossiemouth is another winning racehorse trained by Ireland’s Willie Mullins. The 66-year-old is right at the top of his game just now.

Reaction from Lossiemouth’s jockey Paul Townend

13:47 , Michael Jones

“I wasn’t going to fight her too much, she wanted to get on with it. I didn’t question her stamina, I just wanted to keep it an even gallop.

“She is very good. She is very professional even though she hasn’t got a whole lot of racing done.”

Paul Townend steers Lossiemouth to victory

13:44 , Michael Jones

Lossiemouth is the fifth filly to win the Triumph Hurdle. It’s another win at Cheltenham this week for jockey Paul Townend who’s enjoying himself out there.

Lossiemouth wins the Triumph Hurdle

13:41 , Michael Jones

Here’s the full result for the Triumph Hurdle:

1. Lossiemouth- 11/8

2. Gala Marceau - 10/3

3 Zenta - 12/1

4. Gust Of Wind - 22/1

LOSSIEMOUTH WINS THE TRIUMPH HURDLE!

13:39 , Michael Jones

Lossiemouth takes the final hurdle in first place and Paul Townend kicks him into action. Gala Marceau and Zenta chase after her but neither can make up ground.

Lossiemouth wins it by a good couple of lengths.

1.30 - Triumph Hurdle

13:37 , Michael Jones

Two hurdles to go and Lossiemouth makes a move to catch Jipcot. The field is clustered behind him though and this is going to be a good finish.

1.30 - Triumph Hurdle

13:37 , Michael Jones

Hypotenus isn’t running all that well and is taking a wide line. Gala Marceau and Lossiemouth are alongside each other just behind Blood Destiny as Jipcot hits the front.

1.30 - Triumph Hurdle

13:35 , Michael Jones

Jupiter Du Gite has opened a lead of about six lengths over Blood Destiny who leads the chasing pack. Behind him there’s a bit of movement as the jockeys look to get into decent positions.

1.30 - Triumph Hurdle

13:34 , Michael Jones

And they’re off! Blood Destiny leads the way alongside Jupiter Du Gite. Lossiemouth sits in fifth in these early stages.

1.30 - Triumph Hurdle

13:33 , Michael Jones

False start! Jipcot jitters as the field approaches the tape and the pack all spread out before the starter drops the flag.

1.30 - Triumph Hurdle

13:29 , Michael Jones

Lossiemouth remains the favourite but Blood Destiny is well backed and a few of the experts fancy him. However with 15 runners there is the added dimension of an outsider coming through to win.

Yesterday saw a whole heap over high odds winners, could today see something similar?

1.30 - Triumph Hurdle

13:27 , Michael Jones

The horses have been paraded and are making their way out onto the course. This opening race could be a cracker and will almost certainly kick off Gold Cup Day with a bang.

The greatest prize of all?

13:25 , Michael Jones

A little race at Aintree in April may beg to differ.

Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup Day

13:20 , Michael Jones

It’s the final day of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival and today’s action features the Gold Cup. Rachael Blackmore won it last year atop A Plus Tard who is in the running again this year. Can they regain their title?

The crowds have flocked in to find out.

What do the experts think?

13:15 , Michael Jones

Alex Hammond has backed the favourite, Lossiemouth, saying: “[She] didn’t get the smoothest run when beaten for the first time at the DRF and can bounce back here.”

However Ruby Walsh fancies the slightly higher odds of Blood Destiny.

“If heavy appears in the going, it suits Blood Destiny because then it becomes a stamina race.” he said, “I don’t see pace in this race to make it a slog but if the ground gets really testing and the track makes it a slog, it definitely goes in Blood Destiny’s favour.”

The ground is said to be Good to Soft so that prediction may not be as accurate this afternoon.

1.30 - Triumph Hurdle

13:10 , Michael Jones

Jipcot, Jupiter Du Gite and Active Duty are the only British-trained runners in the opening race of Gold Cup Day at Cheltenham.

The 15-strong field is almost certainly going to yield an Irish winner but who are the best prospects?

Lossiemouth is the favourite with Blood Destiny and Gala Marceau also favoured in the betting. Lossiemouth lost her unbeaten record over hurdles behind Gala Marceau in the Grade One juvenile hurdle at Leopardstown last month.

Blood Destiny is the weakest of the trio in the market this morning and is making his Grade One debut, but his win at Fairyhouse in January was a fine performance and he should have plenty more improvement to come.

Anyone looking to back a big outsider each-way, meanwhile, may want to consider John McConnell’s Hypotenus at around 50-1.

The festival provides a massive £274m boost to the local economy, a study from the University of Gloucestershire has found. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival including the full race card and Day 4 schedule for Friday:

‘World’s most expensive’ pint of Guinness goes on sale at Cheltenham

12:39 , Michael Jones

Cheltenham Festival fans will be able to drink the “world’s most expensive” pint of Guinness.

While racing enthusiasts digest all the latest tips for Day 3, they can enjoy a different drink after online bookmaker Fitzdares launched a blend of the Irish stout and sparkling wine that will cost drinkers £20 a pint.

“Club Black Velvet” will mix the thick black beer equally with English fizz, with Fitzdares’ chief executive claiming he had concocted the beverage to celebrate the new post-brexit deal for Northern Ireland, agreed at Windsor in late February.

William Woodhams also hopes that the high-cost libation may stop quaffers complaining about the price of a regular pint of Guinness.

Which horses does Sir Alex Ferguson own and when will they race at Cheltenham?

12:29 , Michael Jones

Sir Alex Ferguson eyes Cheltenham Festival glory this week with the former Manchester United manager holding three contenders.

Hermes Allen is among the best tips for Ladies’ Day on Day 2 at the festival.

An avid racing fan since retiring, one of his former players described how racing was not always his main passion.

“Well, we’re very excited about it [Hermes Allen], it’s a very good horse, we’ve got the Irish to beat, but we look forward to it,” Sir Alex told ITV. “It’s unbelievable, Honeysuckle, I don’t think anybody was left without a tear, the emotion of the thing, the jockey and trainer. [Arsenal or City in the title race?] I’m not interested.”

Here are Sir Alex’s three horses to watch out for this week.

Paul Townend previews his Gold Cup day

12:20 , Michael Jones

Jockey Paul Townend spoke to Ladbrokes about his prospects on Gold Cup day at Cheltenham. First up he’s riding Lossiemouth in the Triumph Hurdle at 1.30pm and says form is on her side.

“I spent a lot of time trying to figure out which one I would ride.” said Townend.

“I am happy to be on Lossiemouth but whether I am on the right one remains to be seen. We were unlucky at the Dublin Racing Festival.

“She showed huge ability on her two wins before that and to get as close as she did to Gala Marceau after suffering so much interference that day was impressive. My horse has the form in the book so I sided with her.”

Why the Cheltenham dress code could be the beginning of the end

12:12 , Luke Baker

You know what I’ve never understood? Ties. If ties didn’t already exist and you tried to introduce them to the world tomorrow, people would look at you like you were insane. “It’s a bit of cloth that goes around your neck, and if you don’t wear it to a job interview you’ll probably not be able to afford rent next month.”

“Oh, OK. Does it at least keep your neck warm?” my fashion-backwards audience asks.

“That’s the great thing: no.,” I reply. “Also, it’s really uncomfortable, and you have to coordinate your entire outfit to match it.” And then, presumably, they put me in prison.

My point is, there are so many little accessories and affectations that we accept as a matter of course, never questioning why our worth as human beings is intrinsically tied to a functionless piece of cloth or leather that we’re expected to shell out major cash for. And based on the latest news, it looks like Cheltenham Racecourse agrees with me, as the horsiest place on earth finally took the important step of easing restrictions on its dress code.

Rachael Blackmore provides A Plus Tard update for Gold Cup 2023

09:40 , Luke Baker

Rachael Blackmore is optimistic about her Cheltenham Gold Cup chances with A Plus Tard despite the weather this week.
