Chemglass planning another campus expansion at Vineland industrial park

VINELAND — Chemglass Inc. will expand its campus in the city industrial park again following demolition of an adjacent North Mill Road property acquired more than a year ago from NDS Technologies.

The scientific glassware manufacturer and distributor will construct a 32,864-square-foot building, more than five times the size of the former NDS building at 3823 North Mill Road.

Chemglass intends the new building for production and storage uses. The 2.49-acre site is next door to its original facility here and across North Mill Road from two other company buildings.

The expansion was unanimously approved at the Planning Board hearing recently.

Company executives Phil Surdam and Dave Surdam said they employ about 275 people and expect further hiring with the expansion.

Vineland Planning Board on Wednesday night approved Chemglass Inc. to demolish a building it acquired last year at 3823 North Mill Road to make way for a 32,864-square-foot production and warehouse building. The new building would be the company's fourth in the city industrial park. “Most of our employees are highly skilled and are trained either in-house or we get a lot of our employees from Salem Community College, where Phil and I are actually on the advisory council to the college,” Dave Surdam said.

The board agreed to waive a requirement to retain some existing wooded area. The existing NDS building is 6,000 square feet.

In September 2021, Chemglass got city approval for a 12,900-square-foot addition to its 3800 North Mill Road property. The addition mainly provided warehouse space, with some production capacity.

Chemglass was founded in 1947 in Newfield. The history of the family owned company states it moved into the northern section of the industrial park in 1980, and since then repeatedly has added capacity.
