Chemical leak at Indiana high school causes ‘multiple’ injuries

An unspecified chemical leak in an Indiana high school reportedly caused “multiple” injuries to students and faculty Tuesday.

“We got a big whiff of it,” Beech Grove High School student Jose Cheshier told Indiana station WRTV. “It stinks.”

The senior believed the leak smelled like gas.

WRTV reported 11 adults and nine students were being treated on site. The source of the leak remained a mystery well after investigators arrived. One officer reportedly felt burning in his nose and throat as he got closer to the school.

Emergency crews evacuated the central Indiana school, where Mayor Dennis Buckley indicated several people were impacted by the leak, but offered few immediate details.

Beech Grove City Schools addressed the situation on Facebook.

“Beech Grove High School was evacuated this afternoon due to concerns of a smoke related issue that was located inside Beech Grove High School,” the school group said on Facebook.

School officials added “emergency vehicles” were on the scene. Local station WTHR said that included HAZMAT crews and ambulances.

“All after school activities scheduled at the high school are canceled for tonight,” school officials said Tuesday. “Thanks for your understanding!”

This is a developing story.
