Cherokee County firefighters safe after car crashes into fire station, transformer

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services were forced to relocate after a car ran into the fire station, hit a transformer and the backup generator.

The fire station on River Park Blvd. has been left without primary or backup power sources due to the crash.

Firefighters told Channel 2 Action News they were inside the station when they heard a loud explosion. When they walked out of the station, they found one car with damages and a driver still inside the car.

There was fluid on the ground near the car that had caught on fire. As firefighters worked to get the driver out of the car, other firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

Officials said units that would normally be housed at the fire station will be relocated to neighboring stations and will continue to be staffed as normal to reduce any possible disruptions in service and response to the community.

It is unclear what caused the crash and the driver of the car has not been identified.

Officials have not confirmed if the driver will face any charges.
