Cherry Hill To Introduce Budget With No Tax Increase Tuesday

CHERRY HILL, NJ — As businesses struggle to reopen, unemployment remains high and people across the country are uncertain where their next paycheck will come from, Cherry Hill is set to introduce a budget that has no tax increase, according to Mayor Susan Shin Angulo.

The proposed budget is set to be introduced when Cherry Hill Council meets Tuesday night, 7 p.m. The meeting will be held virtually.

“In fulfilling the commitment I made when I first took office, Township Council and I are managing the township budget and our local government responsibly while making critical investments in public safety, roads, infrastructure, parks, historical sites, and open spaces,” Shin Angulo said in her weekly update. “I am extremely proud of this budget and I look forward to sharing additional details about it in the coming weeks.”

Municipalities in New Jersey typically introduce their budgets in the later winter or early spring, and cast their final vote in the summer. In April, Gov. Phil Murphy extended the fiscal year to Sept. 30 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Murphy held the state's first budget address in February, before the pandemic broke out and the state was shut down in March. He held his second budget address on Aug. 25, at which time he called for more taxes and revenues to help offset the impact the pandemic is having statewide, local officials did all they could to keep taxes from increasing. As a result of the later budget address, municipalities were permitted to push their budget deadlines until the end of October. Read more here: Cherry Hill Set To Introduce Budget Ahead Of Extended Deadline
