Cherry Hill man fatally punched during parking dispute in Camden

CAMDEN - A city man is accused of fatally punching a Cherry Hill resident during a parking dispute.

Troy Leary, 35, allegedly struck 39-year-old Terence "Terry" McManus around 11:15 a.m. on March 11 on the 1100 block of Whitman Avenue, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday.

McManus suffered blunt head trauma when he fell to the ground, the prosecutor's office said in a statement. He was declared brain dead at a city hospital one day later.

The incident occurred during an argument that began when McManus backed into a Mercury Milan while parking, the statement said.

"Detectives tracked the Mercury Milan on surveillance video to and from the scene," the statement said.

"Leary was ultimately identified as the driver of the Mercury Milan and the individual who assaulted the victim," it alleged.

According to his obituary, McManus was "a kind-hearted, playful and unique soul" who "was drawn to motors and anything mechanical."

"It was a common occurrence to find Terry in the garage surrounded by the inner workings of a lawnmower or motorcycle he was repairing," it said.

"He also knew some of the most obscure facts of the world," the obituary continued.

It noted his conversations could touch on rockets, animals, food and other topics and that his favorite activities included strolling the boardwalk, rafting the surface and riding his skateboard in North Wildwood.

"He left a legacy of love and compassion," the obituary said.

Leary was charged with manslaughter on Monday. He was arrested that same day during a traffic stop in Camden.

The charge against Leary is only an allegation. He has not been convicted in the case.

Leary is being held in Camden County Jail, pending a pretrial detention hearing.
