Cherry Hill mayor announces decision on whether she'll run again

CHERRY HILL - Mayor Susan Shin Angulo, facing a strong challenge from a fellow Democrat, has announced she will not seek a second term.

Angulo noted her term has been “incredibly challenging, leading our community through an unprecedented pandemic.

“The pace has been grueling and unrelenting, and I believe it is time to catch my breath after my term ends,” she said in a statement Thursday.

Angulo said she reached her decision “after much deliberation and consultation with my family and community leaders.”

Challenge from Cherry Hill council president

Her announcement came nine days after the president of township council, Dave Fleisher, said he would seek the Democratic nomination for mayor.

Fleisher’s bid is supported by his fellow council members and four former mayors, all Democrats.

Angulo did not mention Fleisher in her statement, but she urged voters to support “the entire Democratic ticket in November.”

Angulo said she would finish her four-year term “with passion and enthusiasm.”

A first for Korean-American women

She was the first Korean-American woman to serve as a mayor in New Jersey and previously was a county freeholder, a position now known as commissioner.

She also served on Cherry Hill's council, zoning board and the Human Relations Advisory Committee.

In her statement, Angulo expressed gratitude to Cherry Hill residents “for their dedication and commitment to our community,” and pride that the township’s property tax rate did not rise during her term.

“I am also excited about the potential revenue opportunities, including from cannabis businesses, that can fund key initiatives including safety, health, sustainability, and education,” she said.

New Jersey's primary election will be held for in-person voters on June 6, with early voting to start on June 2.
