What are cherry thing-a-lings?

Cherry thing-a-lings are cherry-filled fritter doughnuts topped with a cherry glaze.

Schmidt Bakery opened in 1963, but owners Bertie and Clem Schmidt started the thing-a-ling tradition in the early 1970s to celebrate George Washington's birthday and the President's Day holiday. The cherry-flavored doughnuts are based on the myth of the first president chopping down a cherry tree and not being able to tell a lie about it.

The bakery sold a record 199,584 thing-a-lings in 2022, beating its previous record of 164,160 in 2021.
