The city of Cherryville commissioned an artist to paint a mural celebrating Cherryville locals Darin and Brooke Aldridge.

On Oct. 5, the city plans to celebrate this mural in a big way, according to Cherryville’s downtown director David Day.

The Aldridges have performed on the Grand Ole Opry stage more than 50 times and were recently named Bluegrass Artists of the Year at the Absolutely Gospel Awards in Nashville, according to a press release from Day.

Both of the Aldridges are from North Carolina, but Darin Aldridge actually spent most of his childhood in Cherryville, according to the release.

The muralist behind the mural, Scott Nurkin, has been creating murals celebrating North Carolina musicians for more than a decade.

Over 10 years ago, Nurkin created his first mural, featuring several of his favorite North Carolina musicians in Chapel Hill, according to his website.

After the initial mural, Nurkin’s project expanded into the North Carolina Musicians Mural Trail.

In most cases, he now paints the murals in the hometowns of the musicians and has murals in Shelby, Raleigh, and several other cities around the state.

The mural trail is even recognized by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

More than a year ago, Cherryville City Council decided to honor the Aldridges with a mural and added funding to the budget to commission Nurkin, Day said.

This summer, that vision came to life, and Nurkin got to work on the mural in mid July, according to Day.

In October, the Aldridges will help the city celebrate the completion of this mural with a free concert.

According to Day, there will be food trucks, fun, and more at the concert, which is set to take place from 6-8 p.m. at Cherryville’s mini park, where the mural is located.

The mini park is located at 219 E. Main St. in Cherryville.
