The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday it will lower the age requirement for new deputies.

Applicants 18 and older can apply. Previously, the starting age was 21.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused staffing shortages around the country and complicated our traditional recruiting efforts,” Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan said in a news release.

Virginia Beach lowered its hiring age for deputies in January; Norfolk made the same move in 2018.

The age adjustment could help the agency expand the number of “qualified applicants” and train the next cohort, the release said.

Pre-employment physical performance tests will be held in April and May, along with a training academy in September. A list of dates can be found on the agency’s website or Facebook page.
