Chesapeake Public School superintendent Jared Cotton will recommend the division hold a fall sports schedule during Monday night’s school board meeting.

Cotton’s recommendation only applies only to varsity sports. He’s recommending that the school division cancel junior varsity sports.

The decision comes two weeks after the division canceled the winter sports season over COVID-19 concerns.

Conditioning for football and competition cheer and football will start Jan. 28 and the first practices are scheduled for Feb. 4. Conditioning for cross country, field hockey, volleyball and golf will start Feb. 1 and the first practices are scheduled for Feb. 15.

As of Monday morning, five Virginia High School League school divisions – Buckingham County, Mecklenburg County, Richmond, Surry County and Sussex County – have opted out of fall sports.
