CHESTER — Thousands will attend the Taste of India festival this Saturday at the Cultural Center of India. You are invited to join in on the fun. This year's theme is "Festive India."

Traditional foods from India will be available for purchase, and attendees can shop for jewelry, music CDs, paintings, saris, etc. Entertainment will be provided nonstop and audiences will be wowed with the amazing talent showcased.

"The public seems to especially enjoy the dance and musical performances by the small children dressed in their colorful Indian clothes, shopping galore and delicious food," Abhi Thakar, Cultural Center of India [Virginia] president, said. "Taste of India celebrates our Indian culture along with the vibrant colors it brings to our lives and the beautiful couture we wear to show it off."

The dance competition choreographed by top talent in the Richmond area includes the following age groups/categories:

  • Ages 7-11 — Dance Fusion

  • Ages 12-15 — Celebrate Festivities from India

  • Ages 16-18 — Bollywood Jodis

  • Ages 19+ — Indian Cinema

Attendees may have the opportunity to sample specific regional foods from various regions of India, including chicken curry, lamb curry, kabab, varieties of bread, the South Indian pancake, the "Dosa” and from North India, “Samosa." Some of the available beverages may include "Lassi," the traditional Indian "Chai" tea from Darjeeling or Assam, and varieties of Indian beer. If you have a sweet tooth, purchase an Indian dessert to devour at the festival or at home.

The annual event on Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. will be packed with guests from all over the Tri-Cities. Admission and parking are free.

The goal of Cultural Center of India is to serve the Indian community of Greater Richmond and beyond. The nonprofit's signature event Taste of India brings the community together under one roof to enjoy Indian culture and heritage.
