Chesterfield celebrates National Dog Day: Activities, adoption event, free swag

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY — National Dog Day is Friday, August 26. How are you and your furry friend going to celebrate?

If you haven't planned anything, Chesterfield County has you covered. They will host a wide range of dog-loving activities that you can fetch. Representatives from Chesterfield will be out and about at six different locations with free swag for your canine companion including a bandana.

How would you like a free professional keepsake portrait? Sparky, the official mascot of Chesterfield Fire and EMS, will strike a pose with you and your pup at Rockwood Park's Ruff House Dog Park as well as Harry Daniel Park. Register online at //bit.ly/3d23cu3 before the sessions fill up. Walk-ups will be taken as time allows.

National Dog Day activities are scheduled between 8:30 - 10 a.m. and 5 - 7 p.m.

Morning locations:

  • Goyne Park at 5300 Ecoff Ave. in Chester from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

  • Midlothian Mines Amphitheater 13301 N. Woolridge Road in Midlothian from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Join the "Pack Walk."

  • Rockwood Park at 3401 Courthouse Road in Richmond from 8:30-10 a.m.

Evening locations:

  • Harry Daniel Park [Playground/Shelter 3] at 6600 Whitepine Road in Richmond from 5-6:30 p.m.

  • Clover Hill Dog Park at 13900 Hull Street Road in Midlothian from 6-7 p.m.

Woodlake Animal Hospital will sponsor live music and a pet supply drive at the Fest Biergarten restaurant at 7044 Woodlake Commons Loop in Midlothian from 6-7 p.m.

The donations will benefit Chesterfield County Animal Services which provides comprehensive care for homeless or unwanted animals. They house, feed, medicate and care for a large number of animals. Visit chesterfield.gov/ for more information.

Unless spending time at a free-roaming dog park, all dogs must be kept on a leash. Dogs can socialize and enjoy off-leash freedom at the Chester Dog Park at Goyne Park, Ruff House Dog Park at Rockwood Park and Clover Hill Dog Park at the Chesterfield Technical Center on Hull Street.

Interested in adopting a fun-loving, best friend? On National Dog Day, the local NBC television station will host an adoption event. Find your new bestie during "Clear the Shelter" from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at Chesterfield Animal Services located at 9300 Public Works Road.

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by animal welfare advocate Collen Paige to celebrate canines irrespective of their shape, size, breed, etc. He created it also to encourage pet adoption. For more information, visit ClearTheShelters.com.
