Chesterfield woman shot to death at apartment; suspect in case later commits suicide

CHESTERFIELD — County police say Sunday night's fatal shooting at an apartment near Richmond was domestic in nature, and the person believed responsible later killed himself in a highway traffic stop in Hanover County.

The person shot to death at the apartment on Amster Road has been identified as Barbie Brown, 43, of the 11000 block of Arbor Croft Way between Chester and Chesterfield Court House. An email from Chesterfield Police said she was shot as she was walking into the apartment and died on scene.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Two men, one of whom was holding the door open for Brown as she was walking in, were also shot. The second man was shot as the suspect was fleeing the area.

Police identified the suspect as Terrell Brown, 34, of Midlothian. He was the female victim's estranged husband.

About two and a half hours after the shooting, a Chevrolet Tahoe matching the description of the shooter's vehicle was spotted by Virginia State Police on Interstate 295 In Hanover. Troopers were able to stop the vehicle after it got onto Interstate 95 at the Atlee exit, and as they were walking toward the stopped car, the driver shot himself in the head. That man, later identified as Terrell Brown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time he was stopped, Terrell Brown was wanted on charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Despite the suspect's death, police said in the email that an investigation into the shooting was ongoing.
