A Chevrolet Malibu hybrid will no longer be offered for 2020, according to a report from Green Car Reports and confirmed by Chevrolet's website. The 2020 Malibu configurator no longer includes a hybrid model, meaning the 2019 model year will be its last. The rest of the Malibu lineup continues on mostly unchanged for the new model year aside from some tweaks to a few option packages.

The Malibu hybrid introduced a new gas-electric powertrain for 2016 with components shared with the now-discontinued Volt plug-in hybrid. Using a 1.8-liter inline-four gas engine and two electric motor/generators, it was rated at an impressive 46 mpg combined by the EPA. In our testing, a 2016 Malibu hybrid achieved a somewhat more disappointing average of 35 mpg overall.

L, LS, RS, LT, and Premier trim levels carry over for the new model year, as do the Malibu's remaining gas engines, a 1.5-liter turbo-four with 160 horsepower and a 250-hp 2.0-liter that comes standard on the Malibu Premier. The sedan received a refresh for the 2019 model year that included a new continuously variable transmission for 1.5-liter models, so the only change for 2020 is some minor equipment reshuffling.

The 2020 Malibu is already on sale at dealerships, but leftover 2019 Malibu hybrid models should remain in stock for a little while longer if you're interested in picking one up for yourself.
