Chevrolet Prepares for C8 Corvette Production by Adding Workers at Bowling Green Factory
GM is adding jobs at its Bowling Green, Kentucky, facility ahead of the mid-engined Corvette's reveal in July.
More than 400 workers are being hired for a second shift at the plant.
Corvettes have been built in Bowling Green since 1981.
Ahead of the mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette's official reveal on July 18, General Motors has announced that it is increasing production at the Corvette's Bowling Green, Kentucky, plant, where the current C7 Corvette is built. More than 400 hourly jobs are being added, consisting of a second shift of workers, which will bring the total workforce to over 1300 people.
The Bowling Green plant has been producing Corvettes since 1981, with over one million of the sports cars being built since then. GM says it has invested over $900 million into the plant since 2011, including a new paint and body shop, increased engine production capacity, and a "Performance Build Center." The company gives no insight as to how much of an investment it is pouring into the plant for production of the new C8, though. The last C7 will roll off the line in June.
Chevy's new image of the C8 also gives us a new confirmed detail about the car: the URL of the photo includes the phrase ZERV, which had been floated as a codename for the car during its development. The name is a play on Zora Arkus-Duntov's mid-engined CERV concepts of the 1960s, and it makes us again think the C8 could receive the long-rumored Zora moniker, like how the current car is called the Corvette Stingray.
