Cheyenne shooter "recklessly" attempted murder, court documents say

Feb. 20—CHEYENNE — The suspect in last week's shooting in a Cheyenne neighborhood that led to one individual dying "recklessly" caused serious injury to others, according to court documents filed Friday.

Leandro F. Dominguez, 18, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault and battery for shooting at three individuals and potentially causing them bodily harm.

The probable cause affidavit for Dominguez, submitted by Cheyenne Police Department Detective Aaron Willmarth, said that the CPD's investigation concluded that an individual, James Gulley, 24, was driving near Dunn Avenue and East Second Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

Dominguez observed the man's vehicle, and became suspicious. He "started driving through the area to find Gulley's vehicle," the detective wrote. Dominguez then followed the vehicle, which eventually pulled over on Second Avenue.

Gulley exited his vehicle, the detective said, wanting to know why he was being followed. Dominguez said he saw the imprint of a gun in Gulley's clothes and left, calling his brother for help.

The detective quoted Dominguez as saying, "Be ready, this guy's following me, let's go," to his brother, Mauricio Dominguez Jr.

After Gulley retreated, the detective said that Leandro and Mauricio Dominguez Jr. returned to Gulley's vehicle. Mauricio Dominguez Jr. allegedly approached Gulley's vehicle, "brandishing a pipe wrench."

Detectives determined that gunfire erupted after this point. They said the shots were fired by Gulley, who exited his car as Mauricio Dominguez Jr. approached.

Leandro Dominguez fled the scene by vehicle, Willmarth's report said, going back to his residence nearby to get a loaded semi-automatic pistol. He then returned to the scene, and found Mauricio Dominguez Jr. dead.

"Leandro brandished his firearm towards Gulley, pointing it at Gulley's passenger, who had exited the vehicle, Danielle Krix," the report said. "... Gulley retreated, and Leandro started to track him with the pistol in a shooting position. While moving, Gulley retrieved his firearm from his right pants pocket. Leandro started to fire towards Gulley, striking him in the right foot. Gulley's brother, Darnell Gulley, was also nearly struck by the bullets ... as he fled from the gunfire.

"Gulley returned fire towards Leandro, striking him in the left thigh with one bullet."

The three aggravated assault and battery charges against Leandro Dominguez, recommended by Detective Willmarth, were in connection with the attack on the Gulley brothers and Krix. One charge was for bodily injury with a weapon and the other two were for threatening with a weapon.

The murder charge is based on Leandro Dominguez firing multiple shots at James Gulley, one of which did hit him.

A representative for the CPD contacted Tuesday was unable to comment further on the incident, and said the investigation was still ongoing. It is not clear whether the parties involved had interacted with each other in the past.
