Chicago Cubs finish their opening homestand 3-3 after Lorenzo Cain’s home run in extra innings sends them to a 4-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers
Lorenzo Cain’s three-run, tenth-inning home run off Brandon Workman led the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs Wednesday afternoon before a crowd of 10,343 at Wrigley Field.
Cain’s second home run of the day, a 470-foot shot to center, gave the Brewers the series victory as the Cubs ended their opening homestand with a 3-3 record.
After Cain’s homer made it 4-1, the Cubs scored a run in the bottom of the tenth on Jason Heyward’s two-out, RBI single off reliever J.P. Feyereisen. After Feyereisen walked pinch-hitters Willson Contreras and Jake Marisnick to load the bases, Brad Boxberger came in and induced Ian Happ to fly out to left to end the game.
The Cubs were no-hit for six innings and finished with only three hits, one day after being one-hit by the Brewers. They began the day hitting .132, last in the majors.
Trailing 1-0 on Cain’s solo home run off Alec Mills in the top of the seventh, Happ broke up Brandon Woodruff’s no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, snapping an 0-for-34 streak by Cubs hitters after Kris Bryant’s fourth-inning double in Tuesday’s 4-0 loss.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell lifted Woodruff to start the eighth after 74 pitches, only to have reliever Devin Williams serve up a leadoff home run to Joc Pederson to tie the game at 1. It was Pederson’s first hit as a Cub, snapping an 0-for-15 start.
The Cubs had a chance to win it in the ninth when Josh Hader walked Anthony Rizzo with two outs. Rizzo went to second on a wild pitch that sailed to the backstop, but Hader froze Bryant on 3-2 slider, sending the Cubs to extra innings for the first time in 2021.
Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks threw six shutout innings, allowing four hits with six strikeouts in his second outing, but left with a no-decision.
The Cubs begin a six-game road trip to Pittsburgh and Milwaukee on Thursday with an afternoon game against the Pirates at PNC Park.
