The 23-year-old was optioned to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs to begin the season. Outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, the top prospect in the entire organization, was also assigned to the club’s minor league camp. Kevin Alcantara, ranked the second-best player in the system, was optioned to High-A South Bend.

Crow-Armstrong will likely begin the season at a lower level. But for the second-straight season, Davis will begin his season in Des Moines.

More:What’s next for Chicago Cubs prospect Brennen Davis after an injury-riddled 2022 season

Davis made his Triple-A debut in 2021 by bashing a pair of home runs in his first two at-bats with Iowa. He also connected on two home runs in that year’s All-Star Futures Game.

There have been high hopes for Davis ever since the Cubs selected him in the second round of the 2018 draft. But injuries have slowed his rise through the minor leagues.

Davis, who started last season in Iowa, appeared in just 53 minor league games after suffering a back injury that required surgery. He returned for the end of the season and even briefly played in the Arizona Fall League before being sidelined with soreness.

But Davis is now healthy and ready to roll in what should be a huge season for him. Iowa begins the 2023 season on March 31 against the Columbus Clippers at Principal Park.
