Chicago Cubs outfielder Jake Marisnick didn’t slow down as he headed toward home plate.

Third base coach Willie Harris emphatically sent him on Eric Sogard’s single to the right-center-field gap with one out in the ninth inning Tuesday night at Citi Field. Marisnick, representing the tying run, was easily thrown out on an aggressive play that didn’t pay off for the Cubs in a 3-2 loss to the New York Mets.

The Mets nailed the relay from center fielder Kevin Pillar to second baseman Luis Guillorme, whose on-target throw to catcher James McCann beat the diving Marisnick by three to four steps.

Sogard advanced to second on the throw home, and Jason Heyward battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a two-out walk. Mets right-hander Seth Lugo came back to strike out Sergio Alcántara to end the game.

Cubs manager David Ross didn’t take issue with Harris’ decision to send Marisnick.

“That was a really nice relay by Guillorme, almost a blind turn and throw to get our fastest baserunner, trying to make something happen there late,” Ross said. “I err on the side of aggressiveness. The chances of that bang-bang relay, just a nice job by them. They played a clean baseball game and came out ahead.”

The Cubs offense couldn’t solve Mets starter Taijuan Walker, who struck out 12 and didn’t walk a batter in seven innings.

Javier Báez gave the Cubs a lead with a first-pitch, two-run homer in the third. The Mets got those runs back in the third on Pete Alonso’s two-run single off right-hander Alec Mills. Alonso’s sacrifice fly in the fifth against left-hander Rex Brothers stood as the winning run.

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant sustained a bruised right hand after getting hit by a pitch in the first inning. He was removed from the game before the bottom of the second. X-rays were negative.
