Chicago Fire season 11 episode 15 spoilers follow.

Chicago Fire fans have waved goodbye to Kelly Severide as actor Taylor Kinney takes a leave of absence from the show.

Kinney confirmed he would be taking a break from the show in order to deal with an undisclosed personal matter earlier this year. And in last night's episode ('Damage Control', airing March 1) the Lieutenant left town to go to "the best arson investigation training program in the world".

Kinney did not appear in the episode, as he had already left at the time of filming. The news was given to Deputy District Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) from Captain Van Meter (Tim Hopper), the head of Chicago Fire Department's Office of Fire Investigation.

It was hinted at in an earlier episode ('Run Like Hell', airing February 22) that Van Meter would be involved in Severide's exit after he received an ominous message hidden from viewers that he shared with his wife, Lieutenant Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

While Boden is disappointed by the news, he concedes that the training will be beneficial for the firehouse when Severide returns – whenever that may be.

Kinney has been in the role of Kelly in Chicago Fire since the show began in 2012. His character has also made guest appearances on sister shows Chicago Med and Chicago PD.

The star's temporary departure follows Jesse Spencer's exit from the show, another cast member who had been there since the beginning. Known for starring as Captain Matthew Casey in the show, the actor left in 2021 after almost 10 years.

In November, Variety also confirmed that co-creator and co-showrunner Derek Haas would be leaving the show.

"Although I am leaving Wolf Entertainment next year to focus on creating new shows, I'm entirely committed to delivering amazing episodes of Chicago Fire and FBI: International through the end of the current seasons," Haas said in a statement.

"I learned everything I know about storytelling, pace, characters, production values, and hiring the best cast, crews, and staffs from Dick Wolf and Peter Jankowski, and as hard as it is to leave a place you love and have called home for over a decade, including incredible support from Universal Television, NBC and CBS, I look forward to building my own brand in entertainment."

Chicago Fire, Chicago PD and Chicago Med air on NBC and Peacock in the US, and on Sky Witness in the UK.
