Chicago Fire season 10 has been official since February 27, 2020, when NBC renewed the series for a ninth, tenth and eleventh season. So, we don’t have to be on the edge of our seats waiting for confirmation: the future of the first instalment of Dick Wolf's Chicago franchise is assured.

Which is great news, both for the showrunner and for the fans that follow his emergency services universe. It allows the writers to make long-term plans without having to worry about being stopped in their tracks by an early cancellation (*cough* Netflix *cough*).

But what will season 10 be about? We’ve put on our black-and-yellow helmets, pulled on our giant gloves, and grabbed our hoses to find out.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Thanks to the current global situation, Chicago Fire season 9 hit our screens a little later than usual, airing in November as opposed to the usual September/October scheduling we’ve become so used to.

We’d expect season 10 to return to its regular programming, landing in October (just like season one).

Expect the main cast to return. So, Jesse Spencer as Captain Matthew Casey, Taylor Kinney as Lieutenant Kelly Severide, Christian Stolte as senior firefighter Mouch, and Eamonn Walker as Battalion Chief Wallace Boden.

You can also expect appearances from Kara Kilmer as Paramedic in Charge Sylvie Brett, Miranda Rae Mayo as firefighter Stella Kidd, and Joe Minoso as firefighter Joe Cruz.

Daniel Kyri was promoted to series regular in season 9, so Darren Ritter's probably a safe bet for season 10.

"Very excited Daniel is going to be a series regular this year," the show's co-creator and executive producer Derek Haas said in an interview with Deadline. "Ritter has become a big part of Firehouse 51, and Daniel plays him with sincerity and depth that always makes the room excited to write for him."

But, of course, not everyone from season nine will be back: "It's always fun to introduce a new character who brings in new dynamics to the show, and we had fun bringing Mackey to life, especially with her connection to Cruz [Joe Minoso]," Haas told Entertainment Weekly.

"Adriyan let us know she had some private reasons to leave Chicago," he said. "To hear that as a showrunner, you absolutely respect what an actor needs. All I can say is we love her and I know she's going to be great on some other series. And she left 51 on great terms, so there's a chance we could check in on her. We're always looking for something to boost up a crossover! I don't think we've seen the last of Mackey in Firehouse 51."

However, there might be a familiar face coming back this year, which could have implications for season 10.

"I have nothing but respect, admiration, and love for Monica Raymund, so I've kind of kept that door open at all times. Anytime she wants to swoop in and steal our hearts again, we'd love to have her."

Haas added, "I have some plans this year but they're schedule-dependent, so I don't have a lot to tease in case something doesn't happen. Let's just say I definitely have my eye on the end of the season."

Jon Ecker has been a hugely popular new addition amongst fans. Could Haas expand his role in season 10?

"He's been great, and I would not dismiss him out of hand," Haas said (via EW). "I could see him having a long life on Chicago Fire, so that's for us to figure out. As the world keeps turning, we're always looking for people like Jon, who has such a rabid fanbase.

"He's really been awesome. I love watching him work and what he brings. I have a funny feeling if we don't find a place for him on Chicago Fire soon, he's going to be the star of some other show. He has a great vibe and so much charisma."

At the time of writing, season 9 is still airing, but you can bet we’ll be back after the finale’s aired to make some more solid predictions.

It sounds like some shocking events will take us into season 10, making it a little difficult to second-guess what Haas has planned until we’ve seen what he has in store in that epic closer.

"We have a big finale coming, that's all I'll say. We're Chicago Fire, and we don't ever give you everything you want. The finale is going to be rough, I'll say that."
