Chicago Fire fans have been treated to the exciting news of a season 12 in the works, among a slate of renewals for the One Chicago family, with new episodes set to arrive within a matter of months.

Hailing from the prolific television producer Dick Wolf's production company, the shows include Chicago Fire as well as Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. as a sister universe to the Law & Order franchise.

All three of the NBC dramas are currently nearing their season finales, but in classic US network TV fashion, Chicago Fire and its sister shows will be back on the air before Christmas.

So, here's everything we know about the upcoming season 12 at Firehouse 51.

Chicago Fire season 12 potential release date: When will it air?

While we don't yet have an official premiere date, we can expect Chicago Fire to return some time this autumn.

As in previous seasons of the hit NBC show, there will likely be between 20 and 22 episodes of the procedural drama.

When the renewal was announced, One Chicago creator Dick Wolf said in a statement: "I’m pleased to continue my four-decade relationship with Universal Television and NBC.

"All six shows [including the Law & Order franchise] being picked up again is the ultimate accolade to our incredible casts, producers and writers. I'd also like to thank our loyal fans who have kept our NBC shows on the air for what will be a cumulative 84 seasons."

Lisa Katz, the president of scripted programming at NBCUniversal and Streaming, also said in a statement: "We understand the emotional connection our audience has with these characters and we can’t wait to bring more of their stories to the forefront next season.

"A huge thank you to Dick and his amazing team who are the masters of producing incredibly compelling television week after week."

Fear not, when we do have a firm release date it will be waiting right here so you can stay up to date.

Chicago Fire season 12 cast: Who's in it?

This is a slightly tricky question to answer at present, as the cast is slightly up in the air in the wake of recent reports.

There could be a cast shake-up after Deadline reported the new season agreement with NBC requires the main cast to appear in fewer episodes to keep budget costs down.

We haven't had any major Chicago Fire cast announcements yet, but the return of fan favourite Matt Casey, played by Jesse Spencer, for a guest appearance in season 11 has left many hopeful he could be coming back as a series regular.

He has even said he is not against the idea, telling NBC Insider: "The idea when I left the show was that if it was appropriate and it would work with the storyline they wanted to do, I would be open—and they would be open—to bringing Casey back.

"The storyline [in episode 18] does allude to Casey sort of eyeing whether he could actually move back to 51. Can he potentially, in the future, rekindle his relationship with Brett [Kara Killmer] and start that fire again? We’re going to have to see. Casey’s looking at it; it’s a potential thing, but we just don’t know right now. We’ll leave that to the future. We’ll throw it to the gods and see what they say."

Elsewhere on the cast, long-time Chicago Fire star Taylor Kinney is currently taking a break from his role on the show. The actor, who plays Lieutenant Kelly Severide in the drama, stepped away from the drama earlier this year due to personal reasons.

As for the rest of the cast, we would expect (and hope) for the following to return:

• Stella Kidd Miranda Rae Mayo
• Eamonn Walker as Wallace Boden
• Christian Stolte as Randall McHolland
• Joe Minoso as Joe Cruz
• Randy Flagler as Capp
• David Eigenberg as Christopher Herrmann
• Anthony Ferrari as Tony
• Daniel Kyri as Ritter
• Hanako Greensmith as Violet Mikami
• Alberto Rosende as Blake Gallo
