Chicago man arrested, charged with DUI felonies for fatal pedestrian crash on Stevenson Expressway

CHICAGO — A Chicago man has been arrested and charged with two DUI felonies for a fatal pedestrian crash Sunday evening on the Stevenson Expressway.

Octavio Lara Chavez, 40, of Chicago was arrested by the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 and charged with aggravated driving under the influence involving death, a Class 2 felony, and aggravated driving under the influence involving great bodily harm, a Class 4 felony.

ISP announced the arrest and charges against Lara Chavez, which were approved by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office on Tuesday. Lara Chavez is being held pending a detention hearing.

According to ISP, troopers responded to the crash on southbound I-55 near Cicero Avenue and discovered that a Hyundai Sonata was stopped on the right shoulder with three pedestrians outside the car attempting to change the passenger side tire.

Police say a Dodge pickup truck veered off the highway, hitting the Hyundai and two of the pedestrians.

One was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and later pronounced dead. The man was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as 28-year-old Nikolas Hutto of Tinley Park.

Another pedestrian was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. The third pedestrian was not injured.

Lara Chavez, the driver of the Dodge, was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
