Chicago man facing felony charge after allegedly punching transit employee in Loop

CHICAGO — A Chicago man accused of punching a transit employee in the Loop on Sunday night is now facing a felony charge, police say.

According to Chicago police, 41-year-old Derrel Ward, an Ashburn resident, has been charged with one felony count of aggravated battery of a transit employee.

Man accused of beating, robbing man in North Lawndale

Officers say the charge was handed down after Ward allegedly hit the 42-year-old man, who was working as a transit employee, with a closed fist in the 100 block of East Roosevelt Road in the Loop, just after 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Ward was taken into custody by CPD officers less than 30 minutes later in the 1200 block of South Wabash Avenue.

Ward appeared in court on Monday for a detention hearing.

Currently, it is unclear what led to the alleged battery.
