A Chicago police officer was shot and seriously wounded Friday morning while responding to a domestic disturbance call, Chicago Police Department officials said.

The officer, a 15-year veteran of the department assigned to the 12th District, was being treated at Stroger Hospital.

The person who shot the officer allegedly opened fire on officers as they exited an elevator in a building in the 1300 block of West Taylor Street, Superintendent David Brown told reporters outside the hospital Friday morning.

The officer who was injured suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to the hospital in a University of Illinois Chicago police vehicle.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot also addressed the media outside the hospital, and praised officers for their courage. She highlighted the dangers posed by domestic violence calls, which are up in the city. She urged people seeking shelter from domestic violence to call 311 for help.

“We have to remember that the officers, every single day, are risking their lives for our safety and today underscores that,” Lightfoot said

The person in custody has cuts to his wrists, Brown said, without elaborating on how he sustained the injuries. A gun has also been recovered, he said.

Chicago police did not fire their weapons, Brown said.

Outside the hospital, a helicopter hovered loudly overhead while several unmarked police squad cars with their lights on arrived at the ER.

Raindrops fell briefly from the overcast sky as at least five officers directed traffic into and within the parking lot. Five others lingered in front of the emergency room talking to one another and taking phone calls.

In early June, officers were shot in three separate incidents. A man shot police Officer Erik Moreno during a traffic stop in Englewood on June 5. Moreno was released from the hospital a week later.

Just four days before, another officer had been shot during a late afternoon traffic stop in Englewood. That officer, who police said was seriously wounded in the incident, was also released from the hospital following the shooting.

That same week, a U.S. Marshals Service officer was shot in the hand and a police dog was also struck by bullets while serving a warrant on the Northwest Side. The officer had declined hospital treatment.
